Military Bridge, Shop-a-Thon set The Midland Park Public Education Foundation will host its annual Military Bridge and Shop-a-Thon on Thursday, Nov. 15. The event will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. at Midland Park High School located at 250 Prospect Street. The event will include card playing, special fundraisers, refreshments, and a “hallway of shops” featuring products from local businesses. Tickets for Military Bridge are $15 per person and $12 for seniors age 65 and older. Reservations are required. Please note that shopping and other special events will be open to non-card players. The MPPEF is an all-volunteer, not-forprofit foundation that supports district-wide and classroom-based curriculum initiatives and enrichment opportunities within the public school system. Boosters host Spirit Week The Midland Park High School Athletic Boosters Association is promoting “Spirit Week” for these MPHS athletic events: Oct. 23, Boys Varsity Soccer at home v. Park Ridge at 4 p.m.; and Oct. 24, Girls Varsity Volleyball at home v. Leonia at 4 p.m. Residents and team supporters are encouraged to come out and cheer for Midland Park’s student athletes. Scouts collect for Baby Bundles During the month of October, Midland Park Girl Scout Troops 4661 and 4695 will be accepting donations of new baby items for needy babies in the area. The following items are needed: diapers, washcloths, towels, baby shampoo and lotion, diaper ointment and wipes, bottles, clothing, infant toys, pacifiers, blankets, and bibs. New and unused baby items may be dropped off at the following locations: Godwin School, 41 East Center Street;
Highland School, 31 Highland Avenue; Midland Park High School, 250 Prospect Street; Midland Park Memorial Library, 250 Godwin Avenue; A&P, 137 Lake Street; Dunkin Donuts, 80 Godwin Avenue; and Starbucks, 85 Godwin Avenue. The Baby Bundles campaign is an allout community effort to help local babies get a good start. Lions Club slates fundraiser On Tuesday, Oct. 23, Rosario’s Trattoria at 29 Central Avenue in Midland Park will sponsor a Coupon Night fundraiser to benefit the Midland Park Lions Club. Restaurant patrons must present valid coupons in order to participate in this fundraiser. Coupons are available at the Midland Park Library at 250 Godwin Avenue, or by calling (201) 444-8601. The restaurant will donate 20 percent of the proceeds (after tax and gratuity) to the Lions. Cooperstown team holds Wreath Sale The Midland Park 2013 Cooperstown Baseball Team is selling wreaths to help fund next summer’s trip to Cooperstown. The 25-inch wreaths are available in three styles: Classic ($25), Cranberry Splash($30), and Victorian ($30). Yoga Nights offered Dr. Dawn Di Muro will offer yoga for adults and teens on Oct. 23. The program, held in the Midland Park Public Library at 250 Godwin Avenue, will run from 7 to 8 p.m. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat, a large beach towel, and a water bottle. Participants are asked to bring a nonperishable food donation for the Center for Food Action. This program is sponsored by the Midland Park Recreation Department.
Community fights juvenile diabetes
On Oct. 14, Gavin Martinkus of Midland Park and his family joined 4,000 others in the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, a three-mile walk that was held in Franklin Lakes. All told, the participants raised almost $400,000 to help fight juvenile diabetes. When Gavin was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2011, JDRF provided his family with information to help Gavin live a very healthy life. Drug Free NJ presents program The Midland Park Alliance and Elementary PTA invites parents, grandparents, and caregivers of children of any age to attend “The 15-Minute Child Break.” This program by the Partnership for a Drug-Free New Jersey will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1 in the Highland School
library, 31 Highland Avenue. This free one-hour interactive program includes tips for talking to kids about drugs and alcohol, the influence of media and pop culture, the effects of specific drugs, how to strengthen parenting skills, and how to make the most of “teachable moments.” For details, contact Jayneburke@gmail.com.

This meditative, slow, and controlled way of drawing leads to beautiful results. Heftler to speak Sophia Heftler will present “Advance Directive and Living Wills: The Five Wishes” at the Franklin Lakes Library on Tuesday, Oct. 23. Heftler, a geriatric care manager, will discuss how to make plans for wills, advance directives, and various other end of life arrangement. A question and answer session will follow.
