Once-a-week collection begins The once-a-week garbage collection schedule is now in effect in Franklin Lakes, and will continue through March 2013. Those who were receiving garbage pickups on the Monday/Thursday schedule will now have collections on Mondays only. Those on the Tuesday/Friday schedule will have collections on Tuesday only. Should the collection day fall on a holiday, garbage will be picked up the next day after the holiday. The recycling collection schedule will remain the same. Grass and yard waste collections will continue as scheduled through Oct. 31. Residents may bring their leaves to the borough’s leaf compost facility on DeKorte Drive. Candidates Night announced The K-8 PTA presidents will sponsor a Candidates Night on Tuesday, Oct. 16 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. for the seven residents running for the Franklin Lakes Board of Education. During the course of the evening, each candidate will participate in a 15 to 20 minute interview, and have an opportunity to make a brief personal statement. The interviews will be streamed live into a number of classrooms on the first floor at Franklin Avenue Middle School. Those who would like to watch are welcome to attend. For those who would like to watch recordings of the interviews later at their convenience, the videotaped sessions will be posted on the district’s website on or before Oct. 18. All members of the public are invited. Once the videos are posted, an e-blast will be sent to families in the district. In addition, a scrolling text link will appear under News Releases at www.franklinlakes.k12.nj.us. Haunted Library Tour set Franklin Lakes Public Library will host “Fright Night: A Haunted Library Tour” on Friday, Oct. 19 beginning at 6:30 p.m. The after-hours tour will feature a hunt for the library’s
ghosts, and an opportunity to meet some of its infamous characters. This event is open to children in kindergarten through grade five. Admission tickets are required. Temple to present ‘The Cantor’s Son’ Temple Emanuel of North Jersey will host a screening of “The Cantor’s Son” on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. This 90minute 1940 film was the first movie starring famed cantor and entertainer Moishe Oysher. Oysher’s film recalls Al Jolson’s “The Jazz Singer.” A young man with singing talent is “discovered” while washing floors in a New York nightclub and becomes a star. Unlike the Jolson film, this story ends with a different twist. The film is in Yiddish with English subtitles. The program is free and open to the public, and light refreshments will be served. Register for Gobble Rock Concert On Nov. 15, join Presley & Melody for a Gobble Rock Concert at the Franklin Lakes Public Library. This lively, interactive musical experience will begin at 4:15 p.m. and is perfect for all ages. Registration for the concert will begin Oct. 25 for Franklin Lakes residents. Ramapo to host Distinguished Expert Series On Oct. 17, as part of the North Jersey Public Policy Network, Distinguished Expert Series, Ramapo High School will host Professor Lawrence Lessig, the director of the Edmond J. Safra Foundation Center for Ethics at Harvard University. Lessig, in his “The Best Government Money Can Buy,” will outline the corrupting effects of money in politics, institutional corruption, and how it weakens the public trust in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Citizens
United decision. The professor will discuss how to take our government back and will answer questions. Lessig is a professor at Harvard Law School, and is the author of “Republic Lost.” The programs is free and will be held at Ramapo High School, 331 George Street in Franklin Lakes, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. All are welcome. Wellness Hike announced On Oct. 20, Mayor Frank Bivona will host a Wellness Hike at the Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve as part of the Mayor’s Wellness Campaign. The group will meet at the High Mountain Road entrance in North Haledon at 10 a.m. Under the direction of a Franklin Lakes Recreation fitness trainer, participants will hike along the newly groomed trails at this scenic 147-acre site.
