McMahon Franklin Lakes Mayor Frank Bivona and the borough council recently recognized several police officers for their successful work in capturing suspected burglars and impaired drivers. “We have a great group of men led by our chief, Joe Seltenrich,” Bivona said before handing out commendation certificates to the police officers. “Franklin Lakes is fortunate to have you guys protecting us every day. I say that as the mayor and as a resident.” Bivona said he and the police chief talk about the issue of crime all the time and he emphasized that it hurts everyone when crimes are committed in the area and homes are burglarized. He acknowledged that it is a fact of life in northern New Jersey, but he said, “It is great when we can do things that result in the apprehension of these bad guys.” Bivona complimented the work of the police department and the residents who pick up the phone and call the police when they see something suspicious. “While we’re singling out some individual cops tonight,” Bivona said, “it is also important to recognize each and every one of the members of our police force.” Sergeant William Cook and Police Officer Marc McCombs were recognized and commended for the apprehension and arrest of two burglars, a 22-year-old from Irvington and a 17-year-old from Lodi, who were found hitchhiking on the Summit Avenue overpass of Route 208 on June 27. The two had stolen property in their possession: approximately $10,000 in jewelry and coins that was taken (continued on page 30) Garden receives new sign On the morning of Sept. 11, Mayor Frank Bivona dedicated a new sign at the entrance to the Borough of Franklin Lakes Memorial Garden, located adjacent to the municipal fields behind borough hall.
