Community invited to basketball meeting The Midland Park Basketball Association will hold a public meeting on Thursday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. The session will be held in the conference room of the Midland Park Public Library at 250 Godwin Avenue. The group will discuss the upcoming basketball season for boys and girls in kindergarten through eighth grade. The community is welcome to attend. Ambulance corps seeks volunteers The Midland Park Volunteer Ambulance Corps is seeking EMT certified individuals. Members would be allowed to sign up for shifts that meet their personal schedules. Lions Club slates fundraiser On Tuesday, Oct. 23, Rosario’s Trattoria at 29 Central Avenue in Midland Park will sponsor a Coupon Night fundraiser to benefit the Midland Park Lions Club. Restaurant patrons must present valid coupons in order to participate in this fundraiser. Coupons are available at the Midland Park Library at 250 Godwin Avenue, or by calling (201) 444-8601. The restaurant will donate 20 percent of the proceeds (after tax and gratuity) to the Lions. Soccer Association plans meeting The Midland Park Soccer Association will meet on Monday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Midland Park Library at 250 Godwin Avenue. The agenda will include magnet sales, updating bylaws, and planning the end of season party.

Scouts collect for Baby Bundles During the month of October, Midland Park Girl Scout Troops 4661 and 4695 will be accepting donations of new baby items for needy babies in the area. The following items are needed: diapers, clothing, ointments, bibs, infant toys, pacifiers, wipes, nursing accessories, washcloths, bowls and spoons, and baby wash and lotion. Please note: Glass items and baby formula cannot be accepted. New and unused baby items may be dropped off at the following locations: Godwin School, 41 East Center Street; Highland School, 31 Highland Avenue; Midland Park High School, 250 Prospect Street; Midland Park Memorial Library, 250 Godwin Avenue; A&P, 137 Lake Street; Dunkin Donuts, 80 Godwin Avenue; and Starbucks, 85 Godwin Avenue. Have ‘Coffee with the Mayor’ Midland Park Mayor Bud O’Hagan will host his monthly “Coffee with the Mayor” session on Saturday, Oct. 20. Cooperstown team holds Wreath Sale The Midland Park 2013 Cooperstown Baseball Team is selling wreaths to help fund next summer’s trip to Cooperstown. The 25-inch wreaths are available in three styles: Classic ($25), Cranberry Splash($30), and Victorian ($30). Interact Club sets events The Midland Park High School Interact Club will host a Yard Sale on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the high school at 250 Prospect Street. Church holds Food Drive, pet blessing The Midland Park United Methodist Church is collecting non-perishable foods in support of Action Against Hunger. The collection will take place on Sunday, Oct. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the A&P in Midland Park. On Oct. 14, the church will hold its 11th Annual Bless-
ing of the Animals Service at 4 p.m. Families and pets are welcome to this annual service started by Saint Francis of Assisi. The church is located at 269 Godwin Avenue in Midland Park. Gala honorees
(continued from page 12) member of the Class of 1991. Kennedy, a member of the Class of 1995, was killed by a suicide bomber targeting U.S. Army leaders in Sarkowi, Afghanistan, on Aug. 8, 2012. Kennedy was most recently assigned to the Headquarters Company of the 4th Infantry Division’s 4th Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Carson, Colorado. He had been deployed to Afghanistan for just two weeks when the attack was made on him and the U.S. leaders on their way to meet Afghan leadership. He was on his fourth tour of duty. He had earned numerous awards and medals for his service, including the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Valorous Unit Award. Week of Respect

On Tuesday, each student committed to one or more random acts of kindness and, in their classrooms, they wrote a short description of the act, how they think they made someone feel, and how they felt afterward. On Wednesday, students were given new seats in the cafeteria in order to foster new relationships and expand social boundaries. On Thursday, students took the AntiBullying Pledge with their class. Friday was School Spirit Day, and the students dressed in red, white, and blue to show respect for the nation’s veterans and those in the armed forces. Morning and afternoon meetings were held throughout the week to focus on respect in various ways. J.KOSTER
