Health Fair is this week The Wyckoff Board of Health will hold its Annual Health Fair and Influenza Prevention Program on Thursday, Oct. 4 at the Cedar Hill Christian Reformed Church, 422 Cedar Hill Avenue in Wyckoff. The event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. This year’s vaccine will protect against the H1N1, H3N2, and a new strain of B Yamagata lineage of flu viruses. Timing of the receipt of the seasonal influenza vaccination is critical to ensure immunization for the peak influenza season. It is therefore recommended that the vaccine be administered in early October. Annual vaccination against influenza is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control. Individuals must be 18 years and older to receive an influenza vaccination. Residents from surrounding towns are welcome to attend this program. Those who are insured through Medicare Part B must bring their Medicare Part B Card to the Influenza Prevention Program in order to receive the vaccination. The Wyckoff Board of Health, through a contract with the Northwest Bergen Regional Health Commission, will directly bill Medicare. Those who are 65 or over and do not have Medicare Part B should receive the vaccine from their regular health care provider. Medicare HMOs will not be accepted. A $25 fee will be charged to those who do not have Medicare Part B. The fair will also include health education, blood pressure screening, nutritional education, balance and fall risk assessment, body alignment, diabetes screening, home care and community resources, physical therapy counseling, social worker/elder care, mental health/stress management, depression and anxiety disorder screening, and prescription counseling. Enjoy opera at the Y The Wyckoff YMCA’s performing arts program will stage its third opera production: “I Pagliacci” (in Italian with English subtitles) and “Sister Angelica” (in English) on Friday, Oct. 26. The 7:30 p.m. performance will take place on the Y’s Carl Pfeifer Performing Arts Stage at 691 Wyck- off Avenue in Wyckoff. With a cast of over 20 local amateur and professional singers, the production follows the success of last year’s presentation of “Barber of Seville,” and 2010’s “Gianni Schicchi.” This production will feature a cameo of Studio 691’s Dance Company, which is part of the Performing Arts School at the Wyckoff YMCA. A ballet sequence in Act I will highlight 19 dancers ranging in age from nine through 14. For the first time, the Y has partnered with the Liederkranz Foundation, Inc. of the City of New York. The Liederkranz Foundation, Inc. was established in 1948 to sponsor musical events, particularly those devoted to vocal music and to provide financial support for young artists. For this production, the organization has sponsored past winners of their prestigious vocal competition to perform leading roles. Serving as the production’s director is Reegan McKenzie, a former opera singer, who played an integral role in the development of the Jerome Hynes International Opera Foundation. McKenzie has served as director of each of the Y’s Broadway musicals. Tickets for the program are $40 for preferred seating. Gallery seating is $20.
