Children learn about Picasso The Franklin Lakes Public Library will offer two workshops on Picasso for children and young adults. On Dec. 4, students in grades five and up are invited to “Pablo Picasso Portraits.” From 4 to 5 p.m., attendees will explore the artist’s abstract artwork using watercolors and tempera paints to create cubist-style portraits. Children in grades three through five are invited to a holiday art workshop on Thursday, Dec. 6 with professional artist Brandon Dorney. Teens invited to Drop in Movie The Franklin Lake Public Library will host a Drop in Movie for young adults on Thursday, Nov. 29 from 4 to 6 p.m. The adventure film will feature a treasure hunter in hot pursuit of a mythical item that has been passed down for centuries. The movie is rated PG and runs for 131 minutes. Registration is not required. The library is located at 470 DeKorte Drive. Scouts sponsor Christmas Tree Sale Franklin Lakes Boy Scout Troop 34 annual Christmas Tree Sale is under way. The sale is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Dec. 23. Nursery-grown trees will be sold at the Franklin Lakes United Methodist Church at 454 Pulis Avenue. Wreaths and roping for the holiday season will also be available for purchase. PBA holds Coat Drive The Franklin Lakes Police Department PBA Local 150 will hold its Annual Coat Drive on Dec. 1 and 2. This year, the PBA will also collect winter hats and gloves. Donated items may be dropped off at the Franklin Lakes Police Department at 490 DeKorte Drive. Last year’s coats were donated to Saint John the Baptist Church in Paterson, where they were distributed locally to those in need. Board of education to meet The Franklin Lakes Board of Education will meet on Tuesday, Nov. 27. The 8 p.m. meeting will be held in the music room at Franklin Lakes Middle School at 755 Franklin Avenue. Light-hearted Christmas programs set The Franklin Lakes Public Library is offering two lighthearted Christmas programs. The programs are free and open to the public. Seating will be available on a “first come” basis. On Dec. 2, the library will hold a Holiday Music Program featuring Celtic harpist and Franklin Lakes resident Lauren Mary Longo. Hear some new twists on not-sotraditional carols from around the world. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Franklin Lakes Library. On Dec. 4, Glenn LeBoeuf will present a history of Christmas at 7 p.m. Come to laugh and learn as LeBoeuf

Free music downloads available Franklin Lakes Public Library has joined Freegal to offer access to songs from Sony Music’s catalog of legendary artists. Freegal will allow the Franklin Lakes Library to increase the size and diversity of its collection by offering access to hundreds of thousands of songs. Under the terms of the agreement, registered cardholders of the Franklin Lakes Public Library may download a select number of Sony Music tracks in the MP3 format each month at no direct cost via www.franklinlakeslibrary.org. Area pets go online Franklin Lakes Animal Hospital has joined other animal welfare organizations in listing their homeless pets on Petfinder.com, the oldest and largest database of adoptable animals on the Internet. The site currently has over 323,000 homeless pets listed, and it is updated continuously. More than 12,950 animal welfare organizations in the U.S., Canada, and other countries post their pets on the site. Franklin Lakes Animal Hospital can be viewed at http:// www.petfinder.com/shelters/NJ609.html. An individual
who is thinking about adopting a pet can enter search criteria, and receives a list of available pets near his or her hometown. Adoptions are handled by the animal placement group where the pet is housed, and each group has its own policies. Petfinder.com was created in early 1996 as a grassroots project to end the euthanasia of adoptable pets. Since its inception, the site has facilitated approximately 20 million adoptions, making it the most life-saving initiative in animal welfare. Temple plans Chanukah Celebration Barnert Temple invites the community to a Chanukah Celebration on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 4:45 p.m. The event will feature the lighting of the outdoor Menorah, a potluck supper, and a Latke Taste-Off. Attendees are invited to enter their favorite latkes in the taste-off contest and bring a menorah to add to the festive atmosphere. There will be games, arts and crafts, and Chanukah “gelt” for children. Music for singing and dancing will be provided by NYC Klezmer, a live Klezmer Band based in New York. Attendees are asked to bring an unwrapped toy to be donated to The Center of United Methodist Aid to the Community. Follies sets additional signup dates FLOW Follies, a parent-led volunteer organization that provides scholarships for graduating seniors at Indian Hills and Ramapo high schools, will hold signups for the upcoming show from 7 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 3 and 4 at Ramapo High School, 331 George Street in Franklin Lakes. Director Curt Buckler will be on hand to help the producers welcome all new performers who are interested in singing, acting, and dancing. Parents may also sign up for offstage duties and other volunteer opportunities. Show dates will be March 7 through 10. Parents in the Franklin Lakes, Oakland, and Wyckoff are invited to participate, regardless of whether they have children at the high schools. This annual family-friendly, parent-produced variety show is the largest scholarship provider for students graduating from Ramapo and Indian Hills. For more information, visit flowfollies.org. The Green Raiders’ season consisted of an 8-0 record and the Bergen County, North Jersey League A, and New Jersey North 1 Sectional championships. Yosif, a senior and three-time All-State selection, said, “ I knew we had the potential, but this feels amazing -- my senior year and to go out on top.” Third-year coach Jenn Levirne saw the pieces of the puzzle coming together. “Each year, the team has been getting progressively better,” Levirne said. “This year, they won the county meet, they won the league meet, they won the sectional meet, came in here the top seed in the state and won. It’s an amazing feeling. A unified effort and it was awesome.”
