A new contractor is picking up recyclables in Midland Park, at least for now. Borough Clerk/Administrator Addie Hanna said Ferretti Carting Inc. of Hackensack, who has been doing the job since January under a one-year contract, was told not to do the pickups on Nov. 9 and thereafter. The paper and cardboard collection was done the following day, Saturday, by the borough’s Department of Public Works employees. Hanna said that on Nov. 9, when Ferretti was contacted because the papers were still at the curb in the afternoon, company representatives said the trucks were on the way and would begin at 3 p.m. “By then they would have been working after 4 p.m. and after dark,” Hanna said. “In the last two weeks, they showed up extremely late. It’s a danger to themselves and to anyone driving by them. A car almost hit a worker last week,” Hanna added. She said the contract with Ferretti specifies that

collections must be done between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Hanna said Sterling Carting, the town’s garbage contractor, has been asked to pick up the recyclables as well for now. Sterling had been the second lowest bidder on the recycling when the contract was awarded last December. The council initially planned to award both the garbage and recycling contracts for five years to Sterling to streamline operations by having a single contract, according to Hanna. But Sterling’s recycling component was $17,750 higher over the five-year period. Meanwhile, the borough is advertising for new bids for the recyclables for one, two, three or four years starting Jan. 1, 2013. Bids are due Dec. 7. This week, due to the Thanksgiving holiday, paper and cardboard recyclables will be picked up at curbside on Saturday, Nov. 24. Garbage will be picked up Friday, Nov. 23.
