O’Hagan will welcome the public at 10:30 a.m. in the second floor conference room at borough hall. Residents are encouraged to stop by and discuss any items of interest in this informal setting. Auxiliary cancels luncheon The Midland Park Valley Hospital Auxiliary cancelled its pre-Thanksgiving Covered Dish Luncheon due to Hurricane Sandy. The event will not be rescheduled. The Holiday Luncheon will be held Dec. 5 at Café 37 in Ridgewood. The auxiliary’s participation in the “Adopta-Family” collection will be discussed on Dec. 5. The program, chaired in Midland Park by member Carol Ferrara, raises funds to provide holiday gifts and needed items to assist a local family in need. Continuing education offers trips & tours Midland Park Continuing Education is offering a variety of day trips, Broadway shows, overnight tours, and a wide array of course offerings for adults and youths. Residents of Midland Park and the surrounding communities are welcome to attend. New trips include day outings to the Papermill Playhouse to see “The Sound of Music” on Nov. 29; Manhattan’s Gourmet Markets, “Food Lovers Fantasy” on Dec. 2; and “From Miniatures to Mansions: A Holiday Treat” on Dec. 12, which will include stops at the New York Botanical Garden, Little Italy in the Bronx, and the Glenview Mansion in Yonkers. Overnight tours include a nine-day Alaska trip from May 24 to June 1, 2013; a trip to Niagara Falls and Toronto from June 3 through June 7, 2013; a tour of Chicago from Aug. 18 through 24, 2013; and a four-day trip to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore’s Inner Harbor Sept. 20 through 23, 2013. American Legion Auxiliary welcomes members The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 130, ALA will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m. The group will gather at Veterans Hall located on Faner Road in Midland Park. Military Bridge, Shop-a-Thon set Join the Midland Park Public Education Foundation for a much needed evening out after the storm as it hosts its annual Military Bridge and Shop-a-Thon on Thursday, Nov. 15 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Midland Park High School. The event will include card playing, special fundraisers, refreshments, and a “hallway of shops” featuring products from local businesses. The MPPEF will be collecting food supplies for the Center for Food Action at this event in an effort to help fill the organization’s shelves, which have been depleted due to the storm. Items needed include: Supermarket gift cards, canned meat, vegetables, fruit, cranberry sauce, beans, soup, mac and cheese, peanut butter & jelly, instant potatoes and rice, dental hygiene and soap, diapers (size 3,4,5, & 6), instant gravy, stuffing, 100 percent juice, pasta and pasta sauce. Tickets for Military Bridge are $15 per person and $12 for seniors age 65 and older. Reservations are required. Please note that shopping and other special events will be open to non-card players. The MPPEF is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit foundation that supports district-wide and classroom-based curriculum initiatives and enrichment opportunities within the public school system. Leaf & storm debris collections slated The Midland Park Department of Public Works will pick up storm debris in conjunction with a modified leaf schedule. Once the leaves have been picked up by the DPW in November, branches will no longer be collected. The pickup schedule is as follows: Zone 4; Nov. 13, Zone 5; Nov. 16, Zone 1; Nov. 20, Zone 2; Nov. 26, Zone 3; and Nov. 29, Zone 4. Residents are reminded that leaves should be raked to the edge of the road. Branches less than one inch in diameter (the size of an index finger), may be added to a leaf pile. Branches one to five inches in diameter should not be mixed with leaves, but gathered into a separate pile. Branches over five inches in diameter are the homeowner’s responsibility and will not be included in the collection. Leaves may be brought to the recycling center on Greenwood Avenue as follows: Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesdays from 2 to 8 p.m., Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The center is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
