Veterans Day services set The Midland Park/Wyckoff Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7086 will hold the annual Veterans Day Service in Veterans Memorial Park in the borough’s Wortendyke section (Central and Greenwood avenues), on Monday, Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. All are invited to join in honoring all past and present veterans and their sacrifices for the nation. This year’s guest speaker, Lt. Col. Paul Ruebenacker USMC (Vietnam), will be assisted by Cpl. Harrison Bruining USMC (Afghanistan) of Midland Park. Midland Park Mayor Bud O’Hagan will serve as master of ceremonies. Pastor Lloyd Vorderstrasse of Church of God will deliver the invocation and benediction, and the Faber Brothers will sing the national anthem and other patriotic selections. Leaf & storm debris collections slated The Midland Park Department of Public Works will pick up storm debris in conjunction with a modified leaf schedule. Once the leaves have been picked up by the DPW in November, branches will no longer be collected. The pickup schedule is as follows: Nov. 3, Zone 3; Nov. 8, Zone 4; Nov. 13, Zone 5; Nov. 16, Zone 1; Nov. 20, Zone 2; Nov. 26, Zone 3; and Nov. 29, Zone 4. Residents are reminded that leaves should be raked to the edge of the road. Branches less than one inch in diameter (the size of an index finger), may be added to a leaf pile. Branches one to five inches in diameter should not be mixed with leaves, but gathered into a separate pile. Branches over five inches in diameter are the homeowner’s responsibility and will not be included in the collection. Leaves may be brought to the recycling center on Greenwood Avenue as follows: Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesdays from 2 to 8 p.m., Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The center is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Auxiliary announces events The Midland Park Valley Hospital Auxiliary will hold a pre-Thanksgiving Covered Dish Luncheon on Wednesday, Nov. 14. The luncheon will include a discussion of the auxiliary’s participation in the “Adopt-a-Family” collection. The program, chaired in Midland Park by member Carol Ferrara, raises funds to provide holiday gifts and needed items to assist a local family in need. Church hosts financial seminar The Midland Park Christian Reformed Church located at 183 Godwin Avenue in Midland Park will host a financial management seminar on Saturday, Nov. 10 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Ken Johnson, a certified financial planner for over 30 years, will lead this program. Register now for basketball Registration for the Midland Park Basketball Association’s winter program will close on Nov. 9. Boys in kindergarten through grade 12 and girls in kindergarten through grade nine are invited to sign up. Clinics and games will be played in Midland Park or Waldwick. Military Bridge, Shop-a-Thon set The Midland Park Public Education Foundation will host its annual Military Bridge and Shop-a-Thon on Thursday, Nov. 15. The event will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. at Midland Park High School located at 250 Prospect Street. The event will include card playing, special fundraisers, refreshments, and a “hallway of shops” featuring products from local businesses. Tickets for Military Bridge are $15 per person and $12 for seniors age 65 and older. Reservations are required. Please note that shopping and other special events will be open to non-card players. Help honor America’s heroes The Midland Park Recreation Department encourages the community to thank U.S. military personnel for their service by participating in the American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign. To participate, visit the DePhillips Center at 50 Dairy Street and fill out a holiday card. These cards will be delivered to veterans, military families, and active duty service members at hospitals and installations around the world. The program is now under way and will conclude on Nov. 30. Members of the community may sign cards on weekdays from 3 to 9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 6 to 9 p.m.
