May 30, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 3 Wyckoff Voters to endorse council, committee candidates by John Koster In Wyckoff, the June 5 primary will feature Republican County Committee contests in four districts, and the chance for voters to endorse the Wyckoff Township Committee candidates from both parties who will run in the November general election. Incumbent Republican Kevin Rooney and his running mate, Haakon Jepsen, will be seeking the endorsement from their party’s voters, while Democrat Eileen Avia will be seeking her party’s endorsement. The three will vie for the two available seats on the township committee in the November general election. Wyckoff’s Republican County Committee election will feature contests in Districts 1, 2, 7, and 9. In each district, voters are asked to select one male and one female committee representative. These representatives are charged with various duties, the most important of which is the selection of a replacement when a Republican leaves before his or her term has expired on the Wyckoff Township Committee. They also vote on the biannual selection of the Bergen County Republican chairman. In District 1, Sabaudin Skenderi is running against Lou Graglia, a four-year incumbent. Graglia is listed on the party line with his running mate, Lisa LoRusso, a newcomer. In District 2, Kathy Scarpelli, a county committee member since 2000 and former planning board member, will be running with Wyckoff Township Committeeman and former mayor David Connolly. Dana Christie and Ken Porro are also running in that district. In District 7, incumbent Joe Schuh, a 30-year county committee veteran will be Wyckoff police officers investigated a fatal accident in which an 82-year-old woman was found dead inside her home on May 18 from an apparent death by carbon monoxide poisoning from her own car. The woman was found dead by her son, who had come to her house on Covington Place to make sure she was all right when she failed to answer a telephone call. The son entered the house through the enclosed garage. The car was running inside the garage with the garage door closed. The son found his mother lying on the floor in an upstairs bedroom above the garage. The family dog was found in another bedroom of the house, also deceased. In District 9, newcomers Susan and Joel Winton will be running. Also running is former Wyckoff Republican League President Bob Kane. The main surprise of the general election came when Mayor Christopher De Phillips announced that he would not seek re-election. Rooney, the Republican incumbent, is an arborist and area business operator who served as mayor in 2011. (continued on page 20) not equipped with carbon monoxide detectors. The Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department has reported that their carbon monoxide detectors recorded carbon monoxide levels of more than 1,000 parts per million at the scene. Levels of 35 parts per million or more are considered toxic. Police believe the victim had arrived home some time around 4 p.m. the previous day, and that the car had been running in the enclosed garage for up to 20 hours when the son was unable to reach his mother by telephone and came to the house.
