Participants will learn the basics of CPR for adults, children, and infants and will take home a practice mannequin, DVD, and certificate of completion. Light refreshments will be served. Church holds Yard & Bake Sale Grace Methodist Church and Nursery School will hold a multi-family Yard and Bake Sale on Saturday, June 2. The sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 555 Russell Avenue in Wyckoff. Wyckoff Day Chili Cook off set Everyone who attends Wyckoff Day on June 9 is invited to weigh in on the Chili Cook Off, which is being sponsored by the Wyckoff Chamber of Commerce. Businesses are asked to bring their best chili to share with the community. Winners will be selected for the Peoof a special tour of the county’s historic sites, especially those in any way related to the Civil War era. For a single fee of $10, adults could purchase a ticket to visit the Schoolhouse Museum in Ridgewood, The Hermitage in Ho-Ho-Kus, The John Fell House in Allendale, the Hopper Goetschius House in Upper Saddle River, the Old Stone House in Ramsey, the Mahwah Museum in Mahwah, and the Van Allen House in Oakland. Most of these buildings are based on core structures that date to before the American Revolution, but all of them were occupied during the Civil War era and afterwards, often by families that had lived in Northwest Bergen County for generations. Sitting on the front porch in the shade, spinner Kathy DeLuccia and lace maker Amparo Turizo, both of whom studied their guild crafts at the Ridgewood Community School with the late Gunvor Jorgensen, appreciated the Zabriskie House for its delightful view and cool shade. Board of education seeks candidates The Wyckoff Board of Education will have three seats available in this year’s school election, which will be held in on the day of the November general election. Two of the vacancies are for a full three-year term; one vacancy is for a one-year term. Candidates must file a nominating petition with the local school board in order to be placed on the ballot. The deadline to submit a petition is June 5. Prospective candidates may obtain a School Board Candidate Kit online at www.njsba.org. Published by the New Jersey School Boards Association, the kit includes a sample nominating petition, information about the legal qualifications for school board candidacy, and the role of the school board member. Information about the New Jersey Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process are also included. Register for upcoming programs Grace Nursery School, located at 555 Russell Avenue in Wyckoff, is currently registering students for its summer camp and fall nursery school programs. Grace’s “Summer Full of Fun” summer camp offers eight weeks of programming for children. Choose two-, three-, and five-day camps on any weeks. Camp runs June 25 through Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon. History Day (continued from page 11) Boonstra, a lifetime resident of Wyckoff, said the township committee would be meeting with the four Zabriskie House trustees -- Jim and Judy Abma, Bob Bushman, and Jean Hildebrandt -- to develop partnerships in which the township can join with private individuals and companies to continue refurbishing the house. “I think the Zabriskie House Board of Trustees is doing a great job,” Boonstra said. “There are a lot of things we need to take a look at, including the gutters, floorboards, and re-pointing some stones.” “This is really basic,” Connolly said of the Zabriskie House and its property. “It reminds us of where we’ve come from as a community and makes us appreciate our community all the more. Can you believe that where we’re standing is only 25 miles from New York City?” “I think this is to remind us of our roots,” Judy Abma said. The May 19 event, which included spinner, a lace maker, and a uniformed Civil War re-enactor, was part
