Zabriskie House was highlight of History Day
by John Koster Wyckoff Mayor Christopher DePhillips and former mayors Rudy Boonstra and David Connolly turned up on the Wyckoff leg of the Second Annual Northwest Bergen County History Day to visit Wyckoff’s Zabriskie House. They praised the four trustees for their work in revitalizing the 1730 mansion as a center of local history. The Township of Wyckoff owns the Zabriskie House, which was deeded to the township in 1973 by the last private owner, Grace Quackenbush Zabriskie. With funding tight due to traditional fiscal conservativism and the present financial crunch, the trustees and the township committee members are seeking funds from sources other than taxpayers to carry out repairs on sections of the building. The house contains local memorabilia and reconstructed rooms from the period around the Civil War, with family photographs, vintage furniture, and household utensils. “The Zabriskie House is a jewel and a treasure in this township,” said Mayor DePhillips. “It is a precious educational resource in teaching people to understand and appreciate Wyckoff.”
“Jim and Judy (Abma) have done so much,” said Connolly. “They really took it over and ran with it.” He also praised the other trustees and Chuck Lota, a financial consultant who helped locate and allocate money deeded to the Zabriskie House in people’s wills. (continued on page 21)
