School to close early Summer vacation will start earlier than expected for Midland Park Public School students. The board of education recently approved moving the last day of school from June 20 to Monday, June 18 due to two unused emergency closing days as a result of the mild winter. Students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m. on June 18. Fire department to host memorial The Midland Park Volunteer Fire Department invites the community to its Annual Memorial Service on Wednesday, May 23. The service, which will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the firehouse on Witte Drive, will honor the deceased members from the department. Light refreshments will be served. Memorial Day events set Midland Park’s Memorial Day observance will be held Saturday, May 26. The day will begin with a flag raising at 9 a.m. at the Vietnam Memorial on Dairy Street. The annual parade will begin at 10 a.m. at the Midland Park Municipal Building. The parade will proceed down Vreeland Avenue to Franklin Avenue and onto Godwin Avenue to Veterans Plaza, where a Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. After the service, all are invited to the firehouse on Witte Drive for hot dogs and soda hosted by the American Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary. In the event of rain, the memorial services will be held at the firehouse at 11 a.m. Service of remembrance announced The Midland Park Christian Reformed Church will celebrate its 23rd Annual Service of Remembrance and Thanksgiving on Sunday, May 27 at 5 p.m. in honor of the military. Refreshments will follow. The service will include a short meditation and patriotic and religious hymns. All are welcome. The church is located at 183 Godwin Avenue. Church hosts Garage Sale Midland Park United Methodist Church will hold a Garage Sale on Saturday, June 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church located at 269 Godwin Avenue. Pet photo benefit set Keith Hopkins Photography’s “Dog (and Cat) Days of Summer” event will be held June 13 through 16 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the studio at 216 Godwin Avenue in Midland Park. The event will benefit the Ramapo-Bergen Animal
Refuge, Inc. in Oakland. Participants who make a $25 donation will receive a 15-minute session and a 5x7 of their furry friend. Appointments are limited and book quickly. Pool opens Memorial Day weekend The Waldwick Municipal Pool will host two opportunities for Waldwick and Midland Park residents to check out the Hopper Avenue pool prior to signing on for the season. Residents of the two communities will be able to use the facility free of charge during Memorial Day weekend and the following weekend, June 2 and 3. Proof of residency is required. Badges must be presented thereafter. Resident and non-resident registrations for the 2012 season are now being accepted, with forms available online at www.waldwicknj.org under “Municipal Forms.” Waldwick’s facility includes a main pool, a wading pool, a concession stand, and a new swing set for young patrons. The pool, which is located at Hopper Avenue and West Prospect Street, will be open from noon to 8 p.m. weekdays beginning June 25, and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends beginning May 26. The pre-season rates for Waldwick and Midland Park residents through June 22 are $55 for adults, $50 for children, and $45 for seniors. Rates for non residents are $150 for adults age 18 and up and $125 for children ages four to 17. Children who are three years old or younger are admitted free. An additional $10 fee will apply to each badge purchased after June 22. First time registrants must register in person at the Waldwick Borough Clerk’s Office, 63 Franklin Turnpike to have an ID picture taken. For details, call (201) 652-5300. Register for Summer Camp Mail-in registration for the Midland Park Summer Camp is now in progress. The six-week camp will be held from June 25 through Aug. 3. The program is open to children who will be entering grades one through eight, and is filled with activities and theme weeks. Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the option for 4 p.m. dismissal. Space is limited, and early registration is advised. Registrations will be taken in the order in which they are received. Forms are available at www.mpnj.com. (continued from page 22) as farms disappear and “McMansions” pop-up all over. We have seen our modest shopping area turn into a megamall. We have experienced Grand Union, A&P, and even a smaller, human-scaled Stop & Shop come and go. We were appalled at the new Stop & Shop, which reminds us of a huge impersonal airplane hangar. We were here when there was a hard-fought and successful effort to keep ShopRite from opening a store on Cedar Hill Avenue. Now another ShopRite wants in, and we are very wary. If it is a human-scaled, friendly place that doesn’t try to draw from every town within 40 miles, perhaps we can learn to live with it. Marianne Van Blarcom Wyckoff
