Bradley won the $1,000 Louis Bay II Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition, which is open to all New Jersey high school juniors and seniors. The state-level victory is Wyckoff’s second triumph in the New Jersey League of Municipalities competition. Ramapo student Sandra Van Alstine won the $1,000 state-level prize in 1996. Last week, Wyckoff Mayor Christopher De Phillips and the entire township committee congratulated Bradley and handed him a certificate and the check for $1,000. Bradley, who has been accepted to Michigan State, will have his photograph and the winning essay published in the October 2012 issue of New Jersey League of Municipalities Magazine. Mayor De Phillips read the conclusion of Bradley’s 500-word essay at the May 15 public meeting. “Living in Wyckoff has bettered my life tremendously,” Bradley wrote. “It’s a town that is rich in culture, history, and there is never a dull moment here. The town committee has done all it can possibly do to make Wyckoff a standout town in a county that is known for great municipalities. Without the superior knowledge table organizations, houses of worship, friends, and neighbors will contribute to the success of this day, which is all about celebrating community. To secure a booth, become a sponsor, or to volunteer at the event, call Jennifer Sauer at (201) 891-2081, extension 117. Register for upcoming programs Grace Nursery School, located at 555 Russell Avenue in and political awareness of the town committee, Wyckoff would have languished as so many other towns are under current difficult times. Instead it has flourished and offers itself as a beacon of example to others.” Bradley’s essay quoted James Madison: “If all men were angels, government would not be necessary.” Then Bradley explained in detail how Wyckoff coped with the necessity. He explained how the five township committee members are elected to staggered three-year terms, how they select a mayor from among their number every year, and how the committee members have supervised the development of Boulder Run and other shopping areas and garnered funds for the support of the K-8 and regional school systems. Bradley also cited statistics from 2008 that said that 19.4 percent of Wyckoff residents were registered Democrats, while 39.9 percent were registered Republicans, and 41.7 percent were unaffiliated. “For a town filled with such diverse political views, it is necessary that a township committee be formed to voice different opinions,” he said. “It is a blessing to have a committee that is so focused and diverse in a town like Wyckoff. The committee directly represents the sentiments of the people and they do a superb job at doing so.” The entire committee praised Bradley for his research and writing.
