The Fifth Annual Waldwick 5K Run/1 Mile Walk on Sunday, May 6 is being dedicated to the memory of Marine SSG. Joseph D’Augustine, with his initials, JD Semper Fi, embroidered on the left sleeve of the runners’ shirts. Sgt. D’Augustine, a Waldwick resident and graduate of Waldwick High School, was killed in an explosion while serving his second tour of duty in Afghanistan, following two tours in Iraq. “I felt it was important that we honor and keep Joey’s memory alive by dedicating the 5th Annual Run to him,” explained Run Director Stan Kowalski. “After speaking to Joey’s dad, Mr. D’Augustine told me he fully supported our intention of not only dedicating this race in his name but also adding his initials to the runners’ shirt sleeves.” Added Kowalski: “Runners and walkers, as you lift your left arm in your stride, and you catch a glimpse of JD Semper Fi on your sleeve, please keep Joey and his family in your thoughts and prayers on this day. Joey was and always will be a true ‘Waldwick Warrior’. He is our hometown hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. I’m certain Joey will be watching over each and every one of us on May 6th,” Kowalski added.
