Midland Park was one of three districts in the northwest Bergen area that chose to keep the school election in April rather than moving it to coincide with the November general election following enabling legislation adopted in January. “I’m honored that the board has chosen me to lead them for the upcoming year,” said Sullivan “I have a great deal of respect for my fellow board members and look forward to working with them on the important issues that the district faces.” Sullivan said his goals for the coming year are to continue to improve student achievement and focus on what’s right for all the students of Midland Park. “Together with the administration, we can continue to improve our programs and facilities without ignoring the fiscal responsibility we have to the residents of the borough,” he said. Sullivan was reelected to his third term on the board at the April election and served as the board’s vice president William Sullivan selected as school board president for the past two years. A nine-year borough resident, she is an elementary school teacher with the Livingston School System and a clinical faculty member at Montclair State University. In other business at the reorganization meeting, the board reappointed Stacy Garvey as board secretary. Midland Park High School’s former long-time athletic director is back at the high school as an administrator on a per diem basis. The board of education last week appointed Edward Salvi to serve as a substitute athletic director at the rate of $225 per day without benefits. Salvi retired as athletic director/director of the continuing education program in June, 2010 after 34 years in the district. Ron Standridge, who served as the part-time AD since Aug. 1, 2011, left in March, and Salvi has been filling in since then. Salvi returns as AD on interim basis Superintendent of Schools Dr. Marie Cirasella said Salvi will likely serve in this substitute post until July 1, when a permanent appointee is expected to be in place. The board is seeking an applicant to fill the AD post half time along with the newly created position of half-time assistant principal for the middle school. The position is now being advertised, she said, though no salary has been determined. This combined position was included in the additional staffing anticipated in the recently-approved school budget for 2012-13 school year.
