Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • March 28, 2012 Midland Park The Midland Park Public School calendar next school year will provide for a spring break one week later than proposed by the calendar the board failed to approve last month. Under the calendar unanimously adopted by the board last week, spring break will begin on Good Friday and continue the week after Easter, March 29 through April 5. The Board revises school calendar proposal for 2012-13 previous proposal scheduled spring recess for the entire week before Easter, March 25-29, in essence making the break one day shorter. In discussing the issue in February, however, some trustees felt that the late March vacation fell too close to the February vacation, which next year falls Feb. 18-22. Another important consideration, trustees said, was keeping gradu- ation on a Friday, as has been the tradition. Seniors must have attended the required 180 school days before commencement ceremonies can take place. Compatibility with the calendars of other area towns is also important, according to Board President Robert Schiffer, because of the sports schedules. As adopted, classes for students will begin Thursday, Sept. 6 and end June 26, with two snow days provided. Over Christmas, there will be no school from Dec. 24 through Jan. 1. Classes will resume Jan. 2. A Wyckoff man, 53, is facing multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, after he reportedly attempted to run over two police officers in Hawthorne in the early morning hours of March 13. The previous day he had told a local woman at the Midland Park 7-Eleven that he wanted to commit vehicular manslaughter against a Midland Park police officer. Midland Park Police sergeant John Gibbons reported that the incident took place at 2:35 a.m. at the Dunkin Donuts on Goffle Road in Hawthorne, when the accused tried to run over Midland Park Police Officer Christopher Birch and North Haledon Police Officer Michael Cedars, who were standing in the parking lot on a break. Neither policeman was hurt, but the Wyckoff man reportedly hit the North Haledon police car, causing extensive damage to the doors on the driver’s side. The man fled the parking lot, with Officer Birch in pursuit. Birch followed the man through multiple towns and ultimately halted the chase in Allendale, citing safety concerns. Birch was able to identify the driver, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. The man was arrested later the same day in Waterloo, New York, from where he was extradited on March 21. He is now in the Passaic County Jail, unable to post the $50,000 bail. Gibbons said the man had told the woman at the 7Eleven that the Midland Park Police Department had tried to burn down his house. A check of past records showed no connection between the man and the Midland Park Police Department, Gibbons said, other than a summons for a motor vehicle violation last August. Officer Birch was not the issuing officer. Hawthorne police have reportedly also charged the Wyckoff man with two counts of aggravated assault, criminal mischief, reckless driving, failing to report an accident, failing to comply with a police officer’s directive, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving without insurance. Midland Park police have charged him with eluding a police officer, Gibbons said.
