Midland Park March 28, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 5 On Saturday, May 5, the Midland Park Baseball Association will host its first Official Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run™ skills competition from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Johnny Vander Meer field. The program is free to boys and girls seven through 14 years of age. Pitch, Hit and Run™ is intended to encourage youth participation and emphasize the “fun” element of baseball competition. Participants will compete in three aspects of baseball/softball: pitching, hitting, and running. Children do not have to be registered to play baseball or softball in the town program in order to be eligible. Event organizer Michael Folignani, a member of the Midland Park Baseball Association, has spearheaded the contest in the hope of encouraging Midland Park youth to hone their skills, and to further their enjoyment of the game. “I’m thrilled to run this competition for our town. I hope it will become an annual event,” said Folignani. He added he not only expects the competition will keep players already in the Midland Park program at fever pitch but also attract younger children to the game. He anticipates approximately 100 children to come out for the contest. Association plans baseball skills competition Presently the association is accepting registrations. The last day to sign up will be at the association’s baseball parade on opening day, April 14. There will be a table manned by association members for the final sign up. Competitors are divided into four age divisions: seven and eight year olds, nine and ten year olds, 11 and 12 year old, and 13 and 14 year olds, and have the opportunity to advance through four levels of competition, including team championships at major league ballparks and the national finals at the 2012 MLB All-Star Game. The individual pitching, hitting, and running champions, along with the all-round champion in each age group at the local competition will be awarded and advanced to the sectional level of competition. The division that a child will compete in is determined by his or her age as of July 17, 2012. Registration is free and participants will be required to complete the official MLB Pitch, Hit and Run registration/waiver form.
