Chief John Casson puts an end to his career on the Midland Park Police Department this week as he retires after 44 years on the job. “It’s been a great career. It does not seem like 44 years,” he says. “It’s going to be a tough transition for me, like going from 60 to 0,” he admits. Casson reaches the mandatory retirement age of 65 in July, but begins his terminal leave on March 20.

Mayor Patrick “Bud” O’Hagan called Casson “the epitome of a good street cop. He has the insight, experience and ‘gut feeling’ of knowing when a criminal act is happening, and he instinctively acts upon the situation to stop and correct the wrong doing.” Such was the case during the chief’s recent vacation to Puerto Rico with his wife, Marilyn. While Mrs. Casson was checking out some cameras at a Radio Shack, the chief
spotted two men who looked suspicious, stopped their illicit activities and reported them to management. “In his 44 years of police service to the Borough of Midland Park, John has patrolled and protected us without fanfare or public recognition. Be it identifying youthful drinking sites and the culprits, capturing an armed robber who fled to Passaic County, creating our first official (continued on page 25)
