Rosica exhibits ‘Doodle Art’ The artwork of John Rosica will be on display at the Franklin Lakes Public Library during June. For more than four decades, Rosica has been creating doodle art during business meetings, on airplanes, and during quiet times. Today, on advice of artists, his doodles have been enlarged many times and presented framed and numbered with each drawing limited to 20 signed copies. The art of doodles is Rosica’s third career. Beginning in the late 1950s, he began a 20-year career as an executive in the record industry. He was an executive at RCA, Paramount, and A&M Records in New York and Los Angeles before founding Rosica Public Relations in Ridgewood in 1980. Rosica recommended that his first client, Wally Famous Amos, adopt the little-known problem of adult functional illiteracy as his corporate cause. As a result, both Amos and his cause are “famous.” The library is located at 470 DeKorte Drive. Children’s programs announced The Franklin Lakes Public Library, 470 DeKorte Drive, will host a variety of programs for children in July. On July 9, Brian Richard will offer a program of worldclass magic mixed with comedy at 3 p.m. Children in grades three and up are invited to “The Magic of Reading.” VanVliet promoted to sergeant (continued from page 5) The acting chief explained that the new supervisory structure provides for three patrol supervisors with the rank of sergeant; a detective sergeant and one lieutenant, instead of the two on staff for a number of years. Van Vliet, who holds an AA degree in criminal justice from Bergen Community College, was first hired as a police dispatcher In December 1993 and switched to the North West Bergen Central Dispatch Center when the borough joined the center. He became a police officer for Midland Park on July 6, 1997. During his career he was named Top Cop by the American Legion and has received six lifesaving awards for CPR. He even delivered a baby. He is the current president of the local PBA, a position he will have to relinquish as a sergeant. “I’m excited and honored to accept this role, which has been a career goal of mine,” said Van Vliet. “I look forward to working closely with the department members as well as the command staff.” He said he’d like to work on reinstating the bicycle patrol, a program he initiated in his earlier years on the force. In his spear time, the new sergeant coaches two of his four children in baseball, softball and football. In other police department related business, the council authorized the purchase of two new patrol cars, at a total cost of $66,555. The two 2013 Ford Explorers will be purchased from Beyer-Warnock Fleet of East Hanover, a state contract supplier, at a cost of $25,347 each. An additional $15,861 will go to Ken’s Auto Electric for the change overs police vehicles require. Marra explained that the borough’s practice is to replace two cars one year and one the following year, and these new purchases fall within that schedule. Registration will begin June 18. Children in kindergarten through grade two are invited to “Look Whooo’s Reading!” on Wednesday, July 11 at 2 p.m. Attendees may listen to stories and munch on a treat as they create an owl craft to take home. Registration will begin June 20. On July 12, children will get up close and personal with live nocturnal creatures at “Eyes of the Wild.” Children in grades one and up are welcome to touch and pet these new friends. Registration will begin June 21. Singer/songwriter Teri Merliss will perform on Fridays, July 13, 20, and 27, and Aug. 3 and 10 with more imaginative stories and original songs. Sponsored by the Friends of the Franklin Lakes Library, this program will be held at 11 a.m. and is open to children age three and older. Registration will begin June 14. On July 17, youngsters ages three through eight are invited to the library’s annual salute to fireflies. “Firefly Story Hunt” features seasonal stories and songs at 7:45 p.m. The outdoor hunt will begin at 8:15 p.m. Attendees are reminded to bring a container for their “catch.” Registration will begin June 26. Children are welcome to make a craft and an ice cream sundae at “Wednesday Sundae” on July 18. The program is open to children in kindergarten through grade three. Registration will begin June 20. Children in grades four through six are welcome to come to the library on Fridays, July 20 and 27 and Aug. 3 for a creative writing program. Participants will develop an original story. “Creative Juice” will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Registration will begin June 21.
