Retired Midland Park High School educators Donald Nolan and Terrence Sawey were inducted into the Education Hall of Fame last week in front of a standing-room only crowd of former students and colleagues at the August C. DePreker Media Center in the Highland School. The two men, who came to Midland Park High School soon after its opening – Nolan in 1958 and Sawey in 1959 – were known affectionally as “the dynamic duo,” accord-

ing to Godwin School Assistant Principal Michael Healy, a former student who made the presentations. The pair was best known as the voice of Midland Park sports: Nolan as the announcer and Sawey as the spotter at home football games, and Sawey as the announcer at basketball games. Healy praised both for their commitment to students and for their leadership role in the school community. “We were known as “The Three Mus-
keteers,” said Robert Gilmartin, now the executive county superintendent at NJ Department of Education, who said he brought congratulatory messages from the state Commissioner of Education. Gilmartin taught social studies under Sawey at Midland Park High School before leaving to pursue administrative positions that led to his present high-profile post.

Nolan was an English and social studies teacher before becoming a guidance counselor in 1963, assisting many high school students in their college application process until his retirement in 1994. He chaired the district’s Middle States Evaluation process three times during his tenure and served as president of the Midland Park Education (continued on page 33)
