June 13, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 15 Republican primary includes several upset victories by John Koster Wyckoff’s Republican Party challengers, who did not run on the party line, won several upset victories in the township’s June 5 primary contests for Republican County Committee, with three independent Republicans winning seats against Republican League regulars. In District 7, Robert Yudin, Bergen County’s Republican Organization chairman, ran against Joseph Schuh, a 30-year county committee veteran. Schuh was reelected to his seat by nine votes, 74 to 65. On June 14, Yudin will be running for a new term as party chairman. He is being challenged by two other candidates, Anthony Rottino and John McCann. David Connolly and Kathy Scarpelli were the winners in District 2, where they ran as an independent Republican team. Connolly, a former Wyckoff mayor, took 85 votes against official Republican candidate Kenneth Porro, who received 66 votes. Scarpelli, a former Wyckoff Planning Board member and Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education trustee, took 76 votes against official Republican candidate Dana Christie, who received 71 ballots. In District 1, Lou Graglia, a long-time Wyckoff Fire Company battalion chief, won after a challenge from Sabaudin Skenderi, who has run unsuccessfully for a number of local offices. Graglia received 67 votes, while Skenderi received 44. In District 9, newcomer Joel Winton won a seat, earning 46 votes. Republican Robert Kane garnered 17 votes. The uncontested township committee endorsements brought 362 votes for Democratic candidate Eileen Avia, a teacher in the Wyckoff K-8 system; 812 for Republican incumbent Kevin Rooney, a local business owner; and 795 for Haakon Jepsen, a Republican newcomer who is a technical executive with Deutsche Bank in Parsippany. Avia, Rooney, and Jepsen will vie for the two available seats on the Wyckoff Township Committee in the Nov. 6 general election. The limited road closings and alternate lanes of traffic on Wyckoff Avenue between Frances Place and Franklin Avenue in Wyckoff may last through most of the rest of the month of June, with other road work later in the summer. Public Service Electric & Gas will be working on the road surface to install a gas line from 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. weekdays, and inclement weather could extend the work beyond the scheduled completion date of June 22. No work is scheduled for weekends. The section of Wyckoff Avenue being worked on should be open to regular vehicular traffic at night and during the weekend. Motorists, however, are urged to drive with caution and to anticipate delays and plan for extra travel time or plan an alternate route. PSE&G installs Wyckoff Avenue gas line The approximate schedule, which is subject to change, calls for the comprehensive project to run from Frances Place and Franklin Avenue from June 6 to 22, and from Newtown Road and Cedar Hill Avenue between June 23 and July 18. Work on Ravine Avenue is anticipated between Grandview Avenue and Lafayette Avenue from Aug. 1 through 20, and work on Franklin Avenue is expected between Woodfield Avenue and the Franklin Lakes border from Aug. 21 to 31.
