Tennis champion recognized by school board
by Frank J. McMahon Jonathan Carcione, who excelled at the game of tennis at Ramapo High School, was recently recognized by the Ramapo Indian Hills Board of Education. Carcione, who will attend Princeton University this fall, won two straight state tennis championships. He is considered one of the best New Jersey high school tennis players ever after compiling a high school career record of 127-2, including 59 straight wins without a loss since losing in the state semifinals his sophomore year. The board presented Carcione with a certificate of achievement and applauded his successful career at Ramapo High School while Coach Kim Marchese and his parents looked on. “Every coach dreams about having the best player in the state playing ball for him,” Marchese said afterward. “It rarely happens, but I was fortunate, and I guess blessed, to experience that opportunity. I know it will never happen again in my coaching career. Jon’s dedication to the tennis wasn’t even half of what made him such an enjoyable young man to have on my team. Jon’s personality, demeanor, work ethic, and moral values are second to none. “I’ve been coaching men’s tennis for 30 plus years, and Jon is only the second player during that time (who) was completely dedicated to playing for his high school team while the USTA schedule was second. Jon also participated in most of the practices and assisted with other players and was the third coach on the team. In addition to posting a 32-0 record during the 2012 season, Carcione was the Bergen County champion, the (continued on page 12)
