FLOW Area January 25, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 7 Four seats available on regional school board by Frank J. McMahon The Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School District will have three, three-year seats and one unexpired oneyear seat, which was formerly held by Wayne Peterson, available on the board of education in this year’s April 17 school election. The three-year seat of Franklin Lakes trustee Ira Belsky, the one-year unexpired Franklin Lakes term currently held by Debbi Strauss, the three-year seat of Oakland trustee Elizabeth Pierce, and the three-year seat of Wyckoff trustee Robert Gebhard will be available to potential candidates. Belsky is completing his third term on the board, while Strauss was appointed to the board in November, and Pierce and Gebhard are both completing their first terms. Belsky has advised that he is undecided about seeking reelection at this time. Strauss said she intends to seek election, but will have to decide to seek election to either the one-year unexpired term or the three-year term currently held by Belsky if he decides not to seek reelection. Gebhard has advised that he is leaning toward not seeking reelection due to the need to devote more time to his family obligations, and Pierce said she is undecided at this time if she will seek reelection. The board members currently filling those positions and any other potential candidates may pick up petitions between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the school board office located at Indian Hills High School at 131 Yawpo Avenue in Oakland. Anyone interested in seeking election to the board of education must complete his or her petition and file it with the school board secretary no later than 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27. The petitions must contain the signatures of at least 10 qualified voters who live within the district, one of which may be that of the candidate. School board candidates must be U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years of age, are registered to vote, and have resided in the school district for at least one year. Candidates must also be able to read and write. The drawing for the candidates’ ballot positions will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7 in the district office conference room at the administrative office at Indian Hills High. The April 17 election will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. At that time, registered voters will elect school board members and vote on the district’s annual budget, which will be announced and explained at a public hearing set for Monday, March 26.
