A full term on the school board runs for three years. Candidates must file a nominating petition specifying the term with the local school board to get their names on the ballot. The deadline to submit the nominating petition is 4 p.m. on Feb. 27. Prospective school board candidates may obtain a School Board Candidate Kit online at www.njsba.org. Published by the New Jersey School Boards Association, the kit includes nominating petition, information about legal qualifications for school board candidacy, and the role of the school board member. Information about the New Jersey School Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process are also included. Candidates should reserve Wednesday, March 28 at 7 p.m. for the PTA sponsored School Board Candidates’ Night. Kindergarten registration announced The Franklin Lakes Public Schools will hold kindergarten registration at Colonial Road School, High Mountain Road School, and Woodside Avenue School Jan. 31 through Feb. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. Parents of students who will enter kindergarten in September 2012 may register their children at their school of attendance: Colonial Road School at 749 Colonial Road, High Mountain Road School at 765 High Mountain Road, or Woodside Avenue School at 305 Woodside Avenue. Children do not have to be present during registration. Celebrate Chinese New Year Celebrate the Chinese New Year on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Franklin Lakes Library. The 60-minute program will include information on Chinese culture, storytelling, and music. A question and answer session will follow. This program is provided by Shen Yun Performing Arts. Children in grades three through five are invited create a unique paper gift in Heart 2 Heart on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. Local artist Jacque B. will lead this paper crafting workshop. On Feb. 9 at 4:15 p.m., children in kindergarten through grade two may attend Happy Heart Day and create a gift for someone special. Registration for Franklin Lakes residents is under way. Area Brian Moran, executive director of sales development at the Wall Street Journal, will present “Small Business Trends for 2012” at the Ho-Ho-Kus Chamber of Commerce’s first multi-Chamber event. The program will be held Feb. 7 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern, 1 East Franklin Turnpike in Ho-Ho-Kus. Moran will discuss how business owners can use social media, how businesses can reach customers who are always on the go, and alternative forms of financing that are currently available. This networking event is being held in conjunction with the Allendale, Franklin Lakes, Montvale, Park Ridge, Waldwick, and Wyckoff chambers of commerce. The governing body also adopted an ordinance amendment forbidding residents or their hired contractors from dumping or pushing shoveled snow onto road surfaces, which presents a considerable danger to motorists. “A recent New Jersey state law made it illegal to place snow on any public roadways, but a weakness in this law is that it only applies to commercial snowplow operators,” Chief Fox said in a letter to the township committee. “The proposed township ordinance is much more comprehensive, and will give the township the ability to take enforcement action against those individuals who place snow in the roadways, especially after the DPW has cleared those roadways.” The ordinance provides for a fine of $250 for a first offense and a fine of $500 for each subsequent offense.
