Board of education seeks candidates The Wyckoff Board of Education will have three seats available in the April 17 school election. Two of the vacancies are for a full three-year term; one vacancy is for a oneyear term. Candidates must file a nominating petition with the local school board in order to be placed on the ballot. The deadline to submit a petition is Monday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. Prospective candidates may obtain a School Board Candidate Kit online at www.njsba.org. Published by the New Jersey School Boards Association, the kit includes a sample nominating petition, information about the legal qualifications for school board candidacy, and the role of the school board member. Information about the New Jersey Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process are also included. Preschool openings available The Wyckoff School District is accepting applications for the 2012013 three- and four-year-old general education preschool program housed at Sicomac School. The integrated preschool program incorporates the education of special education children with that of general education preschoolers, following general education curriculum standards. To be eligible, general education children must be three or four years of age on or before Oct. 1, 2012. Students will be screened for admission. Sessions meet in the morning from 8:40 to 11:30 a.m. or in the afternoon from 12:30 to 3:20 p.m., five half-days a week in accordance with the Wyckoff school calendar. Parents will be responsible for transportation. Tuition is $3,300. To register, a birth certificate, copy of immunizations, and proof of residency are required. This program is open to Wyckoff residents. Applications may be obtained in the main office at Coolidge School, 420 Grandview Avenue; Lincoln School, 325 Mason Avenue; Sicomac School, 356 Sicomac Avenue; and Washington School, 270 Woodland Avenue. Troop 77 welcomes new members Boy Scouts of America Troop 77, sponsored by Bethany Church, will host an Open House for Webelos who are ready to bridge. The event will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 26 at the church located at 568 Wellington Drive in Wyckoff. Scoutmasters and current troop members will make a presentation, and a panel of troop parents will be on hand to answer questions. Troop 89 holds Open House Wyckoff Boy Scout Troop 89 will host an Open House on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 555 Russell Avenue. The program is open to Webelo boys and other interested boys in grades five through 12. Chartered in 1926, Troop 89 is the oldest continuously operating troop in Wyckoff. Troop 89 offers an activitybased program with an emphasis on outdoor experiences and youth leadership, regular meetings and monthly campouts. Activities include outdoor skills, community service, hiking, biking, rafting, backpacking, participation in local and national events, and summer camp options. Members have participated in high adventure treks from the Adirondacks to Alaska, including backpacking trips to Boy Scout of America’s Philmont, a high adventure base in New Mexico, and sailing expeditions from the Florida Sea Base. Resident exhibits artwork Wyckoff resident Alice Petkus-Mason will be presenting a display of her watercolors in the meeting room of the Ramsey Public Library, 30 Wyckoff Avenue in Ramsey, through Jan. 31. Petkus-Mason has studied watercolor under the instruction of Joel Popadics at the Ridgewood Art Institute for
the past eight years. She previously taught business in local schools and colleges for 42 years. Winter Show Series to begin The Wyckoff Y will offer a Winter Show Series for children in the Carl Pfeifer Performing Arts Center at the Y located at 691 Wyckoff Avenue. The inaugural program, “Brady Rymer and the Little Band that Could” will be presented Jan. 22. Grammy-nominated Brady Rymer creates a happy, rollicking back porch vibe that gets everyone up dancing and smiling. On Feb. 12, “A Year with Frog and Toad” features Arnold Lobel’s well-loved characters as they hop from page to stage in the musical version of the story. Follow two great friends: the cheerful and popular Frog, and the grumpy Toad through four fun-filled seasons, learning life lessons along the way. “Cinderella” will be presented by the Y Arts Youth Theater March 9 at 7 p.m. and March 10 at 2 p.m. The timeless enchantment of this magical fairy tale is reborn with a condensed script to better suit young attention spans. Children’s book discussion groups offered The Wyckoff Public Library offers two book discussion groups for children. Third graders are invited to the library on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 3:40 p.m. to discuss “The Trumpet of the Swan” by E.B. White. On Thursday, Feb. 9, children in fourth and fifth grades will discuss Sarah Prineas’ “The Magic Thief” at 3:40 p.m. The groups meet at 3:40 p.m. at the library’s temporary location at 637 Wyckoff Avenue.
