Baseball association seeks candidates The Midland Park Basketball Association, which oversees the boys’ and girls’ basketball program for those in kindergarten through grade 12, is seeking candidates to fill two open seats on its board. The association is seeking to fill the positions of vice president and treasurer. Community members who are interested in volunteering with the program may submit their names to MPBA President Jerry Mercandante at jerrymercandante@hotmail. com by March 5. Box Tops fundraiser under way Midland Park Elementary PTA is collecting designated box tops from hundreds of favorite products found in the grocery store for the Box Top for Education program. The PTA redeems these coupons through the General Mills Company-sponsored program for cash and, in turn, funds classroom and school projects. The PTA can earn up to $20,000 annually. Community members with coupons will find drop-off locations at the A&P courtesy counter on Lake Street, in the Midland Park Library children’s room at 250 Godwin Avenue, and in the Midland Park Senior Center at 4650 Center Street. Church hosts Ash Wednesday Supper The Midland Park United Methodist Church invites the community to a special Ash Wednesday Supper on Feb. 22. Soup and bread will be served at 6 p.m. followed by a worship service at 7 p.m. The service will include time for personal prayer, Holy Communion, and the distribution of ashes.

Input sought on extended hours The Midland Park Board of Recreation may extend the hours of its Summer Recreation Camp and is seeking input from interested families before making a decision. The proposal includes the possibility of taking over the after-hours program offered by the Midland Park Continuing Education Program last summer. Parents interested in the extended program may e-mail the board at mprec@optonline.net and indicate how long a day the child/children would like. Options include 3, 4, or 5 p.m. School board vacancies announced Three seats will be available on the Midland Park Board of Education this year. A full term on the board runs three years. Interested candidates have until 4 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27 to file a nominating petition. The annual election will be Tuesday, April 17. Prospective school board candidates may obtain a School Board Candidate Kit online at www.njsba.org. Published by the New Jersey School Boards Association, the kit includes a nominating petition, information about legal qualification for school board candidacy, and the role of the school board member. Information about the New Jersey School Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process are also included.
Midland Park Council recently approved this striking new municipal logo, which was designed by borough resident John Sondey. At the recommendation of Borough Administrator Addie Hanna, the artist used a rendering of the side of borough hall that features the windmill and flag. The new logo will be used on stationery and other official items.

The speaker holds a doctorate in zoology from Rutgers University, and certifications in field botany, plant systems, and ornamental horticulture from the New York Botanical Garden.
