Page 28 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • December 12, 2012 DVD releases (continued from page 27) childhood. It is more a fable. It often veers into saccharine sentimentality, but is well-intentioned. The two-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo pack’s extras include deleted scenes, director’s commentary, a makingof featurette, and the music video “This Gift.” The movie is also available as a single-disc DVD. “Dick Tracy” (Touchstone Home Entertainment), starring and directed by Warren Beatty, is a live-action comic strip, bringing to life the square-jawed detective created for the funny papers by Chester Gould. The movie has eye-popping primary colors, grotesque looking villains, the Academy Award-winning Stephen Sondheim song, “Sooner or Later,” lots of stylized action, and Madonna as torch singer Breathless Mahoney. The production design looks like a blend of shadowy ‘40s film noir and MGM Technicolor musical. Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Paul Sorvino, and William Forsythe portray bizarre looking baddies. Beatty’s Tracy is surprisingly bland. He saunters through the movie, looking dashing in an garish bananayellow trench coat. The plot is fairly routine, but it is the style that is the picture’s real star. Pacino, in one of the most over-the-top performances of his career, was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar. The only extra on the two-disc Blu-ray restored edition is a digital copy of the film. “Wu Dang” (Well Go USA Entertainment) takes place in 1920s China. There is a rumor that secret treasure is hidden in Wu Dang Mountain. An American man, greedy for gold and riches, brings his daughter, a prodigy in martial arts, to compete for a championship title in kung fu combat, while he plans to find and steal the riches for himself. It won’t be easy. Fierce competition, dedicated protectors, and unexpected romance block the path to the Wu Dang fortune. The closer the treasure hunter gets to his prize, the more elusive it becomes. Presented in Mandarin, with English subtitles, the movie begins promisingly enough, but soon sinks under the weight of a weak script. There is a making-of featurette on the Blu-ray release. “The Simpsons: The Fifteenth Season” (20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment) is a four-disc Blu-ray set featuring 22 complete episodes. Special features include a special introduction by series creator Matt Groening, deleted scenes, animated showcase, sketch galleries, and unique, Blu-ray-only episodes. Guest star voices include J.K. Rowling, Simon Cowell, and Glenn Close. Since its debut on Dec. 17, 1989, “The Simpsons” has broadcast over 500 episodes.
