Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • December 5, 2012 FLOW Area Trustees agree to set separate school calendars by Frank J. McMahon The Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School Board of Education has decided to adjust the school district’s 2012-13 calendars as a result of the multiple day school closures that occurred as a result of Hurricane Sandy. The school board decided to change the holiday on Jan. 21, Martin Luther King Day, to a minimum day for all students in the district. Faculty and staff will participate in a professional development session in the afternoon of that day. Ramapo High School students, who lost eight school days due to the power outage that resulted from the storm, will have to attend school on Feb. 20, 21, and 22, 2013. Those days were not previously scheduled as school days because they were part of the winter break. Those four makeup days, plus the two days of school that were added to the calendar when the teachers’ convention was cancelled, and the two days that were originally in the school calendar for emergency closings, will result in the 180 school days required for students for the 2012-13 school year. Indian Hills students will be able to off the entire week of Feb. 18 because they lost three fewer days of school during the storm-related power outage. If more school closures are required due to snow or other unanticipated events, the school board advised that the April break days would have to be used for both schools. The April break days would be removed in the following order as the need arises: April 12, April 11, April 10, April 9, and April 8. If additional days are needed, they would be added to the end of the school year, which ends on June 24 for the students in both high schools in the district, and is the day on which graduation ceremonies for both schools are to be held.
