Soccer association to meet The Midland Park Soccer Association will meet on Monday, Sept. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Midland Park Library. Families involved in the intown and travel leagues of the MPSA are encouraged to attend. Athletic shoes needed The Midland Park High School Interact Club is holding an athletic shoe collection to help fund club programs. Casson to be honored Former Midland Park Police Chief John Bennett Casson, who retired from the police department July 31 after 44 years, will be honored at an Oct. 4 testimonial dinner. This event, which is being sponsored by the Midland Park United Republican Club, will be held at the Brownstone in Paterson at 7 p.m. Tickets for the cocktail reception and dinner are $60 per person. MPCE holds fall registration Registration is open for Midland Park Continuing Education’s fall semester. MPCE offers day trips, trips to Broadway shows, overnight tours, and a wide array of courses for adults and youths. Classes include SAT prep, art and crafts, computers, exercise, languages, music, dance, and more. Fall trips will include excursions to New York City theaters to see “Jersey Boys” on Oct. 23 and “Evita” on November 1. Theater-goers may also sign up to see “Sound of Music” at the Papermill Playhouse on Nov. 29. Other fall trips include a visit to Brooklyn and the San Gennaro Feast on Sept. 23, the Culinary Institute and a Hudson River Cruise on Oct. 1 and 23, Villa Roma Resort
in the Catskills to see the Platters on Oct. 2, The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and South Street Seaport on Oct. 13, and the World Trade Center Memorial and Harlem on Oct. 30. A five-day tour to Virginia Beach and Williamsburg is set for Sept. 9 through 13. A nine-day tour of Alaska is planned for May 24 to June 1, 2013. Garage Sale donations sought The Midland Park United Methodist Church, located at 269 Godwin Avenue, is now accepting sellable donations of gently-used items for its Fall Garage Sale. The sale will be held Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the church. Vision & hearing screenings available The Midland Park Lions Club, in conjunction with the New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired, will sponsor vision and hearing screenings at Midland Park Community Day on Saturday, Sept. 8.
Screenings are free to all Community Day attendees. No health insurance is necessary. The screenings will be held inside the DePhillips Recreation Center Building and will be conducted by a licensed ophthalmologist and audiologist. The center is located at 50 Dairy Street. Association hosts Golf Outing The Midland Park Baseball Association will host its annual Golf Outing Fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Emerson Golf Club. The association is seeking corporate sponsors or donations of prizes. The cost for a sign at the tee boxes is $200. Township announces holiday closing Wyckoff Memorial Town Hall and the township recycling and conservation center will be closed on Monday, Sept. 3 in observance of Labor Day. These township facilities will reopen Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 9 a.m. The recycling and conservation center will return to its winter schedule on Saturday, Sept. 1. Hours will be Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The library will be closed Sept. 1, 2, and 3 for the Labor Day weekend. The library will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Memorial Ceremony set The Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department will host a Memorial Ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. The service will be held at the Wyckoff Fallen Firefighters Memorial located at Fire Company #1 at Scott Plaza. The service will honor all those who were lost on Sept. 11, 2001, including 11 residents of Wyckoff. One of those residents was Dana Rey Hannon, a former member of the Wyckoff Volunteer Fire Department who was serving with the FDNY the day of the attacks. All are invited to attend.
Jennifer Rau and Alexandra O’Connor recently took second place in United States Lifesaving Association’s National Lifeguarding Competition’s rowing event for women. Rau, a lifeguard at Ocean Grove, and O’Connor, a lifeguard at Long Branch, represented Monmouth County in the three-day competition, which was held this month in Cape May. Rau and O’Connor raced against 12 other teams in their event, which requires rowers to follow a set course through the ocean. Competitors from Boca Raton, Florida edged the Monmouth County team to take first place. Rau is a graduate of Midland Park High School and of University of Scranton. She has been a lifeguard for seven years and participated in the USLA Nationals in 2011 and 2012. Competitors traveled to New Jersey from several states -- including Florida, California, New York, and Hawaii – and from Canada. The competition features multiple events for men and women, including rowing, swimming, relays, and an Ironman contest.
