Kindergarten Meet & Greet announced The Sixth Annual Franklin Lakes Newcomers and Neighbors Club’s Kindergarten Meet and Greet, an event for children who will begin kindergarten in September, will be held Aug. 21. Participants will meet at the Pulis Avenue Recreational Field Playground from 10 to 11:30 a.m. (Rain date: Aug. 22.) This event is open to club members and non-members. Bobby DooWah JAM session set The Chabad Jewish Center, located at 375 Pulis Avenue in Franklin Lakes, will offer a Jewish Action Music session with children’s entertainer Bobby DooWah on Wednesday, Aug. 15. DooWah, who has been entertaining children for years, has been labeled “The Sergeant Pepper of children’s music” by the New York Times. The program, which will be held from 4 to 5 p.m., is free and includes dinner for children up to six years old. Registration is required. Paws for Reading returns Franklin Lakes Public Library invites students in grades one through five to participate in PAWS for Reading on Monday, Aug. 20. Library hosts events for teens The Franklin Lakes Public Library, located at 470 DeKorte Drive, is offering a variety of programs for teens this month. The Drop-In Movie for Aug. 24, is “The Zookeeper,” rated PG, with a run time of 102 minutes. Teens are invited to learn cartooning with artist Gina Minichino on Tuesday, Aug. 14 from 3 to 4 p.m. All materials are supplied and registration is required. This program is open to Franklin Lakes residents only. On Aug. 15, the Advisory Council for the Community by Teens and for Teens will meet in the Local History Room from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Franklin Lakes students in grades six through 12 who want to promote teen services
in the library and organize community service programs locally or globally are invited. No registration is required. The Teen Summer Reading Auction will be held Aug. 29 from 1 to 3 p.m. Teens who write a one-paragraph book review on any book they are currently reading may earn library bucks for each review submitted. Library bucks may be used to bid on prizes at the auction. All reviews are due by Aug. 20. Autobiography workshop announced Registration is under way for two eight-week autobiography workshops with Janice Rubin. The program will be held on Tuesdays or Thursdays at the VFW Hall at Franklin and Pulis avenues in Franklin Lakes. The Tuesday workshop will begin Sept. 18, and the Thursday workshop will begin Sept. 20. Classes meet from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Tuition is $104. New students will receive a 19-page syllabus. Recreation department seeks volunteers Volunteers who are age 18 and older are needed by the Franklin Lakes Recreation Department to help out mornings and evenings at the center. Register for preschool program Barnert Temple Preschool and Family Center is accepting applications for “Me & My Sprout Shabbat” class, a Shabbat social experience for toddlers and their parents, grandparents, or caregivers. This class, available to all children ages 12 months through 24 months, meets on Fridays from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Classes will begin Sept. 14 and run through May 2013. The cost is $650 for the year. New families not currently enrolled in Barnert Temple Preschool will receive a $100 discount. Children in grades five and up are welcome to help create frightful figures for the library’s Halloween Fright Night set for Oct. 16. On Aug. 16 and 23, participants will paint, color, cut set designs, and audition for acting roles for the annual event. The backstage program will meet from 2:30 to 4 p.m. The Reading Club will wrap up with two programs. For club members in pre-school through second grade, Mr. Twister will delight and amaze as he transforms ordinary balloons into realistic sculptures on Aug. 21 at 3 p.m. Every child will go home with one of his extraordinary balloon creatures. Lasermania Spectacular! by Prismatic Magic will close this summer’s program for members in grade three and up. Set for Aug. 22 at 7 p.m., Lasermania is a collection of current rock/pop music with dramatic laser animation. Free music downloads available Franklin Lakes Public Library has joined Freegal to offer access to songs from Sony Music’s catalog of legendary artists. Freegal will allow the library to increase the size and diversity of its collection by offering access to hundreds of thousands of songs. Under the terms of the agreement, registered cardholders of the Franklin Lakes Library may download a select number of Sony Music tracks in the MP3 format each month at no direct cost via www.franklinlakeslibrary.org. (continued from page 7) adjoining property. Ground arrays would also have to be a minimum of 15 feet from any building or structure. Solar energy systems could not be to displaying any advertising, except for reasonable identification of the manufacturer or operator of the system and, in no case, could any identification be visible from a property line. All solar energy systems would have to conform to the provisions of the borough code for buffer and planting requirements with respect to tree removal, replacement, and protection of no disturbance zones. Any trees or shrubs to be removed to accommodate the installation of a solar energy system would have to be accompanied by a plan demonstrating the need to remove the trees and replacement of the trees in accordance with the provisions of the borough code. To the extent possible, the design of a solar energy system would have to include materials, colors, textures, screening, and landscaping that would blend into the natural setting and existing environment. A permit would be required and would be issued by the borough’s construction official after planning board approval. The ordinance also contains provisions for existing alternative power sources that have been approved and are in operation as of the date of the passage of this ordinance, and for the abandonment of solar energy systems and the penalties for not complying with this ordinance.
