Albert Denis Carilli of Sea Girt, formerly of Franklin Lakes, died April 17. He was 82. He earned his undergraduate degree from City College of New York and his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. He entered an internship and residency program in internal medicine at Bellevue Hospital and Jersey City Medical Center, Seton Hall College of Medicine. He served as a captain in the United States Air Force and was the chief of the pulmonary disease service and pulmonary lab at USAF Hospital at Andrews Air Force Base. In 1963, he began his lifelong affiliation with Hackensack University Medical Center and served there as the director of pulmonary research, director of the pulmonary fellowship program, and associate director of the pulmonary and critical care service. He served as a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Medical School in Newark. He published his research on clinical pulmonary physiology and pulmonary disease in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and the American Review of Respiratory Disease. He was a charter member of the New Jersey Thoracic Society, and served as its president from 1980-82. In 1997, he was recognized by the American Lung Association of New Jersey and was presented with the Sir William Osler Humanitarian Award. He is survived by his wife Carolyn Carilli, his children Catherine Carilli of Boulder, Colorado, Albert Carilli of Wyckoff, and Christopher Carilli of Socorro, New Mexico, his stepdaughters Lauren Koniaris of Summit and Karin Ajmani of New York, New York, and 12 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife Joan (nee Dugan) Carilli, and his sisters Gloria Bardusch, Tess Carilli, and Nina Alessi. Arrangements were made by G. Thomas Gentile Funeral Home in Hackensack. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. Before retiring, he was an electrical engineer at Industrial Electric Service in Hawthorne. He was a parishioner of Saint Elizabeth’s R.C. Church in Wyckoff. He is survived by his wife Barbara (nee Shovan) Kozell, his children Robert J. Kozell of Wyckoff, Barbara A. Matthews of Warwick, New York, and John A. He was a graduate of Bergen Community College and Ramapo High School, where he was a member of their Varsity State Championship Cross Country Team. He was the owner of Howard M. Kruse Lawn Care in Ramsey. He is survived by his children McKenna Kruse of Burlington, Vermont and Alex Kruse of Boston, Massachusetts, and his siblings Kevin Kruse of Pennington and Nancy Connolly of Oakland. He is survived by his wife Genevieve (nee McGarry) Murphy of Nashua, New Hampshire, his son Thomas Murphy of Brazil, and his grandchildren Patrick Murphy and Michelle Murphy Koza. Learn about New Jersey’s wildflowers Nancy Bristow will present a program about wildflowers at the Wyckoff Area Garden Club’s April 18 meeting. The group will meet at 7 p.m. at the Wyckoff Family YMCA’s Lakehouse at 691 Wyckoff Avenue. Bristow, a former math teacher with a passion for gardening, has been an active member of the Master Gardeners since 1988.
