Cleanup Day announced The Franklin Lakes Environmental Commission will hold its spring Cleanup Day on Saturday, May 5 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will gather at the parking lot of the Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve off High Mountain Road. Participants will be provided with gloves, bags, pick-up sticks, and T-shirts. Doughnuts and coffee will be provided by the Franklin Lakes PBA. Board of education to reorganize The Franklin Lakes Board of Education will hold its reorganization meeting on Tuesday, May 1. The 8 p.m. meeting will be held in the music room at Franklin lakes Middle School, 755 Franklin Avenue. Prescription Drug Take Back Day set The Franklin Lakes Police Department, with the assistance of the Franklin Lakes Girl Scout Cadette Troop 239, will conduct a Drug Enforcement Administration-sponsored prescription medication take back program on Saturday, April 28. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Franklin Lakes Police Department headquarters on DeKorte Drive. The event allows individuals to rid their homes of unused, unwanted, or expired medications, by turning them in to law enforcement officials, who will ensure that the drugs are disposed of in a safe manner. Residents are reminded that the improper disposal of drugs has a negative effect on the environment. Pills may be submitted in original containers (with any identifying information removed), or loosely deposited into the collection box. Liquid products, such as cough medicine, should remain in the original container with the cap

Memorial Day Parade participants sought The Borough of Franklin Lakes invites residents to participate in the annual Memorial Day Parade set for Monday, May 28 at 9 a.m. Military men and women, local school groups, churches, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and service and volunteer organizations are welcome to join this year’s event to honor those who have given their lives during war in defense of our country. Woman’s Club hosts Installation Dinner The Woman’s Club of Franklin Lakes will hold its Installation Dinner for new officers at the Preakness Hills Country Club in Wayne on May 16. Library hosts programs for adults The Franklin Lakes Public Library, located at 470 DeKorte Drive in Franklin Lakes, will host a variety of programs for adults during the month of April. Programs are free of charge and do not require registration. On April 24, vacation specialists and cruise planners Monica Pollack and John Migliori will present Cruising 101 at 7 p.m. Learn about the benefits of cruise travel, how to get the best deals, how to select the best itineraries, and much more. A question and answer session will follow. On April 25, join Jason Nazzaro for a special free financial planning seminar. Nazzaro will discuss “Preparing for the Financial Challenges of Retirement.” A question and answer session will follow. Refreshments will be served.
Take an armchair journey with photographer Lorraine Matys who will share insights and images of Japan on Thursday, April 26 at 7 p.m. “Brushes with Inner Japan” will begin in Tokyo, and follow a southerly route on the island of Honshu to the ancient city of Kyoto, visiting sites of historical, religious, cultural, and artistic interest along the way. On April 29, the Cracked Walnuts banjo and washboard duo will present “Music of Vaudeville” at 2 p.m. This program features music, stories, and humor of the stars from 1890s Vaudeville through Prohibition. Join Jan and Jeff Ausfahl as they bring music and song to the library. This special program is sponsored by the Friends of the Franklin Lakes Public Library. Playgroups welcome new members The Franklin Lakes Newcomers and Neighbors Club’s playgroups welcome new members. Playgroups are now forming for children ages three months through four years. Every public school district in New Jersey is permitted to nominate one teacher or educational services professional from each school for recognition. The recipient must have demonstrated excellence over a period of time in the district. A panel that includes district teachers, administrators, residents, and school trustees selects the annual winners from among those nominated by students, parents, and other faculty members. Both Ramapo Indian Hills educators will also be recognized at a Bergen County Teacher Reception luncheon for local Teachers of the Year.
