American Cancer Society volunteers will be tying ribbons throughout these three towns. These Paint the Town Purple activities are designed to get the community excited about the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, the overnight community celebra- Paint the Town Purple coming to FLOW Area tion where individuals and teams camp out, listen to bands, take part in activities, and take turns walking or running around a track “relay” style to raise funds to fight cancer. This year’s relay is scheduled for June 8 and 9 at Indian Hills High School in Oakland. At nightfall, participants will light hundreds of luminaria around the track as part of a ceremony that honors cancer survivors and remembers those lost to the disease. The Relay for Life represents hope Wyckoff Wanderings Opening Day Parade set Wyckoff’s Annual Opening Day Baseball and Softball Parade will be held Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m. The parade of players and coaches will step off from Memorial Field on Woodland Avenue. The parade will continue down Voorhis, Van Houten, and Demarest avenues, and will conclude at the band shell on Memorial Field. Opening Day ceremonies will follow with Mayor Christopher P. DePhillips throwing out the first pitch. In an effort to encourage team unity, the recreation department will sponsor its annual banner contest. Each of the 65 teams in the program will produce a homemade banner for the parade. Prizes will be awarded to the teams judged to have the most original and unique banners. Parents and friends of the players are encouraged to attend the parade and ceremony. League games will begin at noon and 2 p.m. Newcomers plan ‘Playdate in the Park’ The Wyckoff Newcomers and Neighbors will host a “Playdate in the Park” on Friday, May 11 at 3:30 p.m. The group will meet at the playground behind the Wyckoff Municipal Building. ShopRite hearing to continue April 23 Residents of Wyckoff will have their chance at the microphone on April 23 as the Wyckoff Planning Board opens the public hearing on the proposed Inserra ShopRite supermarket to the public. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at Wyckoff Memorial Town Hall at Scott Plaza. The current ShopRite site plan, which was revised to comply with recommendations from the township, calls for a 62,042-square-foot structure to replace a former supermarket at the corner of Greenwood and Wyckoff avenues. The board expects to continue its work on this case on May 9. A June meeting has been tentatively scheduled. Temple plans Mitzvah Day Temple Beth Rishon will hold its Tenth Annual Mitzvah Day on Sunday, April 29 at the temple located at 585 Russell Avenue in Wyckoff. The community is invited to help congregants raise funds to assist Jewish Family Services in fulfilling its goal of providing vital services to North Jersey residents. Mitzvah Day activities will begin with registration at 9 a.m. and will include the annual Mitzvah Walk, a one mile walk around the temple’s residential neighborhood; craft projects; and various collections of items that will benefit JFS families and other non-profit organizations.
