April 11, 2012 THE VILLADOM TIMES I • Page 9 Midland Park Three incumbent Midland Park Board of Education trustees are running unopposed in next week’s election, while newcomer Peter Triolo is seeking the unexpired term of long-time board member Ray Moraski. The election is set for Tuesday, April 17, at which time residents will also vote on the $19,880,417 million operating budget for the 2012-13 school year, which is within the state-imposed cap. Midland Park was one of few districts in the area that chose to maintain the vote on the budget and the school election in April. Legislation adopted in January had given school districts the option of dropping the vote on the budget if it came in under the cap and moving the vote on board members Board members run unopposed; budget on the ballot to the November general election. Robert Schiffer, William Sullivan, and Timothy Thomas are again seeking election to three three-year terms. Schiffer has been on the board for 24 years. Sullivan has been a trustee for six years, and Thomas was appointed to an unexpired term last July. Triolo said he is running because he wants to raise the bar on education in the district. “We need to make sure our children can compete not only locally, but internationally, and only a strong school system with focused real curriculum-driven teachers can accomplish this goal… “For many of us, saving for college is nearly impossible, and the idea of sending our children to private high schools is equally challenging. With two young children my objective will be to increase the already strong educational level of our grammar schools, and make our high school a place where Advanced Placement is standard, not an option… “I feel strongly that our small community can be an example for the state on how to deliver a school system that overachieves, and offers our educators and administrators the opportunity to show their skills and talents reaching for the same goal,” Triolo said. A student-athlete at Bergen Catholic and a graduate of Cornell University, he has lived in Midland Park for 13-years. He owns his own consulting business in the automotive industry, Specialty Accessory Consulting. Schiffer, the current board president, said he is seeking reelection because he feels he brings a middle of the road opinion to the table. “I have always been an activist for children and the needs for a quality education. Those ideas along with my financial business thoughts allow me to also be a protection for all taxpayers. The need for a quality education is mandatory. The need to get the best bang for the tax dollar is also a must,” Schiffer said. He is the founder and managing director of Wasco Capital Services, an equipment leasing and financing company in Glen Rock. Sullivan, who has been the board’s vice president for the past two years, said he is seeking another term because he believes he has the skills and knowledge necessary to help continue to move the district in a positive direction. “We’ve had a tremendous amount of administrative turnover in the last few years, and I feel that I can provide some insight on the students and citizens of the district,” he said. A borough resident since 1987, Sullivan is vice president of sales at Unimac Graphics in Carlstadt, a commercial printing company. “I believe my broad based business experience and management and problem solving skills, coupled with my passion for this town and education, will continue to serve the board and community well,” said Thomas, who was born and raised in Midland Park and graduated from Midland Park High School before going on to a career on Wall Street for the past 24 years. He is currently vice president, legal and compliance office, of J.P. Morgan. The polls will be open from 2 to 9 p.m. on April 17.
