Larkin House (continued from page 3) committee session – said AU is not one of the groups that should have to pay for use of the space, since the group is an organization for retired senior citizens. He said Activities Unlimited is an organization of retired men sponsored by the Wyckoff Reformed Church that provides an opportunity for retirees to meet and participate in common interests. He said that, of AU’s 336 members, 114 live in Wyckoff. The group uses the Larkin House for Duplicate Bridge every Wednesday afternoon, with 20 to 30 members playing, holds practice with the dozen members of the AU Guys Band every Wednesday morning, holds a monthly book club meeting for about 20 members, and holds a public discussion once a month for about 25 members. “We treat the facilities respectfully and, after our use, make efforts to leave it in good condition,” he said. The township committee’s ordinance as introduced recognized that Wyckoff Seniors should be exempt from the $25 meeting fee, which is intended to cover the cost of heating, air conditioning, electricity, and the eventual replacement of the carpets. In response to the speech by MacDougall and other comments, Mayor Christopher DePhillips and the members of the township committee decided to withdraw the introduced ordinance from the agenda and refer it to the Finance Committee. Township committee members shook hands with the AU members who turned out at the meeting, but observed that the committee’s intention – to take the tax burden of maintaining the Larkin House off the general taxpayers – is still important to them.
