Sunday Concert Series continues The Mahwah Public Library provides free concerts on Sundays at 2 p.m. during the month of October. Tickets are not necessary, and seating is provided on a “first come” basis. The 17 North Band will perform on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. Together since 2006, the six musicians will offer a concert of blues, classic country, swing, Latin, klezmer, and familiar ballads. Previously the group has performed at the Military Gala at West Point, New York and the Puffin Cultural Forum in Teaneck. On Oct. 9, the Jose Obando Trio will offer “The 350+ Year Evolution of Salsa.” This group traces the development of salsa beginning with the manufacture and use of percussion by the Africans, which was permitted by the Spaniards in their Caribbean colonies. They also cover the music from Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic. The trio will demonstrate salsa and teach the lively and simple merengue from the Dominican Republic. Tom Doyle and Sandy Cory will present “A Les Paul and Mary Ford Musical Tribute” on Oct. 16. Doyle and Cory combine beautiful vocals and instrumentation in every performance. The Sandy Jacobs Quartet will perform “Jazz, Blues, Bossa & More” on Oct. 23. The quartet will offer great American music from the 1920s to the 1990s by Cole Porter, Peggy Lee, and Nora Jones. The quartet is comprised of Sandy Jacobs, vocals and saxophone; Bob Rodriguez, piano; Stever Varner, bass; and Ronnie Glick, drums. “Globe Hopping with Flute and Guitar!” will be performed by flutist Patricia Lazzara and guitarist Darren O’Neill on Oct. 30. The classical musicians will perform works by Couperin, Molino, Marchelie, Kleynjans, Yoshimatsu, Camisassa, Piazzolla, and Merlin. The library is located at 100 Ridge Road. For details, call (201) 529-READ. Foundation hosts annual races On Sunday, Oct. 2, the Mahwah Schools Foundation will hold its annual fundraising 10K/5K and Kid Run races in Mahwah. These events will start and end in Darlington County Park and will be held rain or shine. Each year, the turnout includes serious and not-so-serious runners from the tri-state area, local families, and educators. Proceeds directly benefit Mahwah’s six public schools through the funding of innovative programming, technology and cultural assemblies. In addition to the 10K, 5K, and Kid Run races, the event will also feature family activities, live entertainment, food, giveaways, and the Trails to Wellness health fair. The event will end with the announcement of the winner of the Run to Super Bowl XLVI. The winner of this contest will receive two tickets to Super Bowl XLVI and $1,500 for travel expenses. The 10K will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K will begin at 10:15 a.m. Award ceremonies will follow each race. For the 10K and 5K, cash prizes will be awarded to the top three overall male and female finishers in each race. Medals will be awarded to the top three male and female runners in each race in each age category. The Kid Run, a series of races for children in kindergarten through grade five, will begin at noon. All children registered for the Kid Run will receive a T-shirt and participation ribbon. Check in and registration will take place at 7 a.m. for the 10K, 8:30 for the 5K, and 10:30 for the Kid Run. On the day of the race, registration fees will be $30 for the 10K, $25 for the 5K, and $40 for both races. Discounts are available for pre-race day registration and members of the New Jersey Road Runners club or USATF-NJ Members. Kid Run registration fees are $10 per entrant. Specialists address parent advocacy group The Mahwah Parent Advocacy Group will host transition specialist Andrea Vaccaro and New Jersey school counselor Frank Appleton on Thursday, Oct. 6 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the media center at Mahwah High School, 50 Ridge Road. Vaccaro and Appleton will offer an overview of transition issues and post-secondary options for students with disabilities in Bergen County Special Services School District. The program is for the parents of middle school and high school children. The Mahwah Parent Advocacy Group is a parent run support group serving the needs of special education parents. Fire company hosts events Mahwah Fire Company #1 will host its Fourth Annual Blood Drive, Food Drive, and Open House on Sunday, Oct. 9 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day honors Firefighter/Fire Inspector Mike Drozd who lost his life in a tragic accident in 2008. Company #1 firefighters will be on hand to show the department’s equipment and trucks. The Blood Drive will benefit Community Blood Services in Paramus. Visitors are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for the Center for Food Action in Mahwah. The Third Annual Fish & Chips Fundraising Dinner will be held Saturday, Oct. 15 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the firehouse located at 100 Miller Road in Mahwah. The cost is $10 per person and includes dinner and beverage. Takeout orders will be accepted. Beverages and dessert will be available at additional cost. The event will feature music, door prizes, and a cash prize contest. A Toucha-Truck event will be held for children who want to explore the various trucks and fan boat the firefighters use.
