He was the senior member of the Salesians’ New Rochelle Province. He was a graduate of Don Bosco Polish Institute, now Don Bosco Prep, in Ramsey, and entered Saint Joseph’s Novitiate at Newton. He made his first profession of vows as a Salesian of Don Bosco on Sept. 8, 1935, and completed his college studies at Don Bosco Seminary, graduating with a B.A. in 1938. He earned a master’s degree in English from Fordham University and a Ph.D. in education from New York University. He was ordained on July 1, 1945. He was assigned for one year to Don Bosco Prep as a teacher. He returned there for an 11-year stint from 1954 through 1965 as religious chaplain and teacher of English. He taught at Don Bosco College for eight years (1946-54). From 1965 to 1974, he was president of Don Bosco College Seminary in Newton. He was vice director of the Salesian Center in Columbus, Ohio. In 1979, he was assigned to the Salesian Provincial Residence in New Rochelle as director. He was the assistant pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Mahwah from 19822002. In 2002, he retired to Don Bosco Prep and remained there until November 2010. He is survived by his nieces Joan Takacs of Melbourne, Florida, Julia Murdzek of Simsbury, Connecticut, and Lucia Melnychuk of Rye Brook, New York. Arrangements were made by Scarr Funeral Home in Suffern, New York. Memorial donations may be made to the Don Bosco Prep Endowment Fund. Eustace Fotiu of Mahwah died Sept. 10. He was 81. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He attended City College of New York and received his bachelor of science in physics and mathematics from Wagner College in Staten Island, New York. He was an adjunct professor of pharmacy at Saint John’s University, and attended Columbia University School of Business and Management in New York City and Newark College of Engineering. He holds an honorary degree in dermatology. His career spanned 45 years in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry beginning with Avon and moving on to vice president of research and development at Pfizer Coty Division. He spent 20 years with Revlon as executive senior vicepresident and vice-president of international business overseeing plants worldwide. He was senior vice president of Halston Bourgese and owned E.F. Consultants. He was an early pioneer in discovering alternatives to animal testing in cosmetic chemical testing and created and developed 12 patents. He held memberships with the American Chemical Society, American Academy of Dermatology, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. He is survived by his wife Mary, his children Karen, Dennis, Ronald, and Huey, six grandchildren, and his siblings Ernest and Anna Marie. He was predeceased by his brothers Nicholas and Anthony. Alva Ruth Haik, nee Gorab, of Ramsey, formerly of Upper Saddle River, died Sept. 8. She was 81. She was president of the Paterson Junior Woman’s Club, a census supervisor, election worker, and a volunteer at Valley Hospital. She was president of her company Results Research, Inc. She is survived by her children Dr. Bruce Haik of Asbury, Ross Haik of Rumson, Daryl Haik Derleth of Ramsey, six grandchildren, and her siblings Joyce Cassatly and George and Ronald Nahass. Craig Thomas Lohmann of Mahwah, formerly of Waldwick, died Sept. 13. He was 24. He was a graduate of Mahwah High School Class of 2006. He attended Bergen Community College in Paramus. He was employed by Pathmark Supermarket in Ramsey. He is survived by his parents Thomas and Frances (nee Fless) Lohmann of Mahwah, his siblings Andrew T., and April Lohmann, both of Mahwah, his grandmother Dolores Lohmann of Midland Park, and several aunts and uncles. Luke Nickels of Mahwah died Sept. 14. He was 41. He was a graduate of Mahwah High School Class of 1987. He is survived his wife Christy, his two daughters, and his brother David Jeffrey Smith, sister-in-law Karen Smith, mother-in-law Camille Constantinides, and brother-in-law Nick Constantinides. She was 89. She had worked as an aide in the operating room at West Hudson Hospital in Kearny. She is survived by her children Diane Polizzi of Upper Saddle River and Andrea Orel of Somerset, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and her sister Regina Longo of Nutley. Father Joseph Stanislaus Bajorek SDB Alva Ruth Haik Ramsey Review Knights to host Charity Golf Tournament The Ramsey Knights of Columbus will hold the Annual Charity Golf Tournament on Oct. 7 at the Wallkill Golf Club, 40 Sands Road, in Middletown, New York. The event will feature 18 holes of golf, a cart, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and an open bar. Prizes will be offered for a hole-in-one, longest drive, and closest to the pin. The event is $130 for golf, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Tickets for dinner guests are $30. The hole sponsor donation is $150. This outing is the chief source of support for the Knights of Columbus’ charities. English as Second Language Class resumes Ramsey adults who have some English skills and want to practice their vocabulary and speaking skills are invited to join the next session of the Ramsey Public Library’s ESL Conversation Class. Seniors plan picnic, trips The Annual Ramsey Senior Picnic will be held at the Ramsey Pool on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at noon. The afternoon will include music by Don Hayek, and special contests. Hamburgers, hot dogs, salad, dessert, and beverages will be served. The cost is $5 per person. Checks may be made payable to the Ramsey Seniors.
