Page 8 THE VILLADOM TIMES IV • September 14, 2011 Ramsey Review Local author discusses new book Meet Margie Gelbwasser, author of the teen book, “Inconvenient,” will discuss her work and the publishing process on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ramsey Free Public Library. A resident of Fair Lawn, Gelbwasser was born in Minsk, Belarus and came to America in 1979 at age three. She lived in a rundown apartment in Brooklyn until her family moved to Bergen County where she adjusted to suburban life. Gelbwasser drew on these experiences to write her first teen novel. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and the author will be available to sign copies after the discussion. The Ramsey Library is located at 30 Wyckoff Avenue. Farmers Market includes activities, music The Ramsey Farmers Market is open every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Main Street train station, rain or shine. The market offers the freshest vegetables and produce, artisanal breads, gluten-free baked goods, organic coffees and teas, homemade pastas, honey, jams, cheeses, gourmet nuts, and more. On Sept. 18 the featured musician will be Mark Bodino. The market’s Apple Festival is slated for Sept. 25, where dozens of varieties of fall apples will be featured. Angela Logan will be the guest vendor with her signature “Mort- gage Apple Cake.” Her inspiring story of how she saved her home from foreclosure by “thinking outside the box,” baking and selling her rich and delicious cake landed her features on Oprah and national TV. Visitors are encouraged to join the Pay it Forward program by dropping off non-perishable food items at a designated market table. Ramsey Farmers Market is sponsored by the Ramsey Historical Association. Visitors to the market can discover the rich history of Ramsey’s farming past with purchase of the RHA’s publications “Images of America: Ramsey” by Ron Kase, and “Portraits of Ramsey” by Naoma Welk. The historic Ramsey Train Station, which was built in the 1840s, was the depot for local farmers who brought their produce for transport to Paterson and beyond. Registration open for Annual Run The 34th Annual Jack McKeown Memorial Ramsey Run will take place on Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Ramsey Municipal Pool on East Oak Street, Ramsey. The 10K will start at 8 a.m. and the 5K will begin at 9:45 a.m. Trophies will be awarded for the first three finishers in a variety of age categories. The fee to participate is $20 for pre-race registrants; $25 the day of the race. All pre-race entries must be received by Thursday, Sept. 23. T-shirts will be given to the first 300 participants. A portion of this year’s registration fee will go to the Jack McKeown Scholarship Fund. Seniors plan picnic, trips The Annual Ramsey Senior Picnic will be held at the Ramsey Pool on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at noon. The afternoon will include music by Don Hayek, and special contests. Hamburgers, hot dogs, salad, dessert, and beverages will be served. The cost is $5 per person. Checks may be made payable to the Ramsey Seniors. Their afghans go to the veterans hospitals, churches, and Ramsey Responds. Attendees of Ramsey Day, Saturday, Sept.10 are invited to visit their booth and enter a contest to win an afghan. Yoga sign up begins Friday, Sept. 9 at the borough hall. Cost is $10 and includes eight weeks with certified instructor Pat Brown, beginning Friday, Sept. 23 at 9:50 a.m. Class space is limited. Choral society holds auditions The New Jersey Choral Society is seeking experienced singers to audition for the 2011-12 season. NJCS is a mixed choir of about 90 singers based in northern Bergen County. Rehearsals are held Tuesday evenings in Ramsey. The 2011-12 season promises many exciting opportunities, including performances of Vaughan Williams’ “A Sea Symphony” and a tour of London, England next summer. Auditions are scheduled for Tuesdays, Sept. 13 and 20 and prospective singers need to be able to sight-read and have a love of all musical styles, from classical to Broadway. Ramsey Class of 1966 plans reunion Ramsey High School Class of 1966 will hold its 45th reunion Oct. 14, 15, and 16.
