Installation of Miller Road bus shelter delayed
by Frank J. McMahon The installation of a bus shelter at the intersection of Miller Road and Franklin Turnpike in Mahwah has been delayed until spring according to Mahwah Township Engineer Michael Kelly. The proposed location for the bus stop is at the northwest corner of the intersection of Old Station Lane and Franklin Turnpike, directly across Franklin Turnpike from the beginning of Miller Road and the newly renovated Veterans Memorial Park. Kelly advised the township council that the bus shelter was originally planned to be installed as part of the township’s 2010 road improvement program, but Bergen County decided to improve the Miller Road/Franklin Turnpike intersection and the traffic signal at that intersection and agreed to install the bus shelter as part of that improvement project. That project was scheduled to be completed in the spring or summer of 2011 but, due to work load issues, Kelly said the project is now planned for the spring of 2012. In response to a question by Council President John Roth, Kelly confirmed that the funding for the project is available, and there is a “high likelihood” that it will be done next spring. The design of the bus shelter, which was chosen by the township, includes dark green posts with a white barrel type roof. The front will have two access ways, and the walls will be clear and will contain no advertising. The shelter will not have any lighting. The existing planter near the bus stop will be reconfigured as needed to permit the shelter to be located diagonally at the intersection. Plans call for the intersection to have a rounded curb and sidewalk that will meet the existing curb and sidewalk on Old Station Lane and be tapered to meet the existing pavement on Franklin Turnpike. The shelter location will be protected by bollards on each end. Residents who ride the New Jersey Transit buses have been asking for a bus shelter at this intersection for some time to protect them from the elements. The township council has been discussing the location of a shelter in this area for several years. NJ Transit bus riders currently wait at the curb on Franklin Turnpike in the area in front of Veterans Memorial Park on the southwestern portion of the intersection in order to commute to New York City. However, the council has never
designated that location as a legal bus stop. In October 2009, a Mahwah bus rider appealed to the council to consider a shelter at this intersection. Kelly issued a report in which he concurred with a previous report by Captain Robert Sinnaeve, the Mahwah Police Department’s traffic safety officer, in which he stated the most appropriate location for a bus stop and a bus shelter would be at the northwest corner of the Franklin Turnpike and Old Station Lane adjacent to the Gulf station.
Scouting out West Point
Mahwah Pack 258 Webelos Scouts recently participated in West Point’s Scout Day. The Webelos enjoyed a fun-filled day that included a cadet tour, martial arts demonstrations, hands-on activities, a brigade parade, and cheering on the Army football team as they defeated Northwestern 21-14. The Webelos are pictured near the Hudson River close to where General Washington’s army placed a great iron chain across the river and succeeded in stopping the British fleet.
