Sunday Concert Series continues The Mahwah Public Library provides free concerts on Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are not necessary, and seating is provided on a “first come” basis. “Globe Hopping with Flute and Guitar” will be performed by flutist Patricia Lazzara and guitarist Darren O’Neill on Oct. 30. These classical musicians will perform works by Couperin, Molino, Marchelie, Kleynjans, Yoshimatsu, Camisassa, Piazzolla, and Merlin. On Nov. 6, Marlene VerPlanck will perform popular American standards. “Broadway Melodies and More” will be presented by the New Jersey Choral Society Chanteurs on Nov. 13. This vocal ensemble includes 16 to 24 New Jersey Choral Society members who provide musical entertainment to the community or non-profit events. The library is located at 100 Ridge Road. Ramapough Indian artifacts on display Pieces from the collection of the Ramapough Family Genealogical Historical Society are currently on exhibit at the Mahwah Public Library at 100 Ridge Road. The display, which was organized by Wallace Dennison, features photographs and tintypes of mud plaster homes, horses and carriages, and local residents including Raymond Suffern, William L. Defreese, William Vandunk, and William Mann. Included in the display are family records, books, newspaper articles, and mementos. Dennison is in the process of collecting and preserving documents and photos pertaining to the history of the Ramapough Indian families. Halloween Costume Parade planned The annual Halloween Costume Parade, which is run by the Mahwah Recreation Committee, will be held Oct. 31 at 6 p.m. at Commodore Perry Field on East Ramapo Avenue. The event will be held rain or shine. Mahwah children, infants through fifth graders, are invited to come in costume and parade through the Haunted House. Prizes will be awarded for costumes by age group, and refreshments will be served. Volunteers from Mahwah High School will be on hand
to decorate the field and lead the ghosts, goblins, and princesses around the field. Secor Farms will provide hay bales, pumpkins, and apples. Club to present ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’

This bestselling memoir of spiritual self-discovery pays homage to the Catholic saints who have accompanied Fr. Martin throughout his life. The author shares his many surprising encounters and journeys with the saints. In November, the group will discuss the first volume of “Jesus of Nazareth” by Pope Benedict XVI. Fire department seeks residents’ assistance The Mahwah Fire Department is competing for the opportunity to win funding for fire equipment and training. Grants are being offered by Liberty Mutual, which is teaming up with fire departments around the country, offering an opportunity to win $10,000. In order to win this contest, residents and friends of the fire department are asked to take an online 10 question Be Fire Smart Quiz. This safety survey takes no more than five minutes to complete. The successful completion of participant’s quiz will be credited to the Mahwah Fire Department. The 10 communities with the most completed quizzes will earn grants for their fire departments. Chamber seeks WinterFest sponsors The Mahwah Regional Chamber of Commerce is planning this year’s WinterFest. This eight-week celebration is scheduled to begin on Dec. 2 with an opening ceremony in Veterans Memorial Park. This year’s festival will present a wide variety of activities for participants of all ages, including charity drives, contests for all ages, dining and retail events, and opportunities to discover the region’s remarkable history and cultural diversity. The theme is “Supporting Our Military Moms and Troops,” and a portion of the proceeds will go to the North Jersey Military Moms, the Mahwah Marine Moms, and the Chamber Organization of the Year. Business and family sponsors are needed from the $25 level to the $5,000 level. Donations from previous festivals have lit and helped maintain the Veterans’ Tree, helped families in need through the Center for Food Action, and funded family-friendly exhibits at the Mahwah Museum. The Mahwah High School Drama Club, under the direction of Jean Johnson, will present William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” beginning Nov. 2, with a free performance for senior citizens at 4 p.m. Performances will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3 through Saturday, Nov. 5. A 2 p.m. matinee will be presented on Sunday, Nov. 6; and a special youth version will be on stage at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5. Tickets for the regular performances are $12 for adults and $7 for students. The youth performance has been shortened and geared toward younger children.
