Learn all about America’s most famous and unsolved-axewell “hatchet”-murders. Did the police botch the investigation? Did our legal process fail? Who committed these bloody slayings? The maid? The sister? The local axe murderer? The illegitimate demented son? The visiting uncle? Or was it Lizzie after all? Hear all of the evidence and make a verdict. Local musicians offer free concert Local musicians Spinner’s End will offer a free concert under the pavilion at Field of Creams Café located at Continental Soldiers Park in Mahwah on Oct. 22 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Partners Ali Andresini, singer/ukulele player, and Mahwah native Ryan Yannalfo, on keyboards, will offer family-friendly jazzy fare. The writer/performing duo will perform its signature love song, “Ron Weasley (Please Notice Me).” Dunn to discuss ‘Mahwah and Mount Laurel’ Tom Dunn will present the history of housing development in Mahwah on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Mahwah Public Library. “Mahwah and Mount Laurel: The Growth of Housing in Mahwah 1900-2000” will cover the controversial 1983 Supreme Court of New Jersey’s Mount Laurel decision about municipal requirements for affordable housing. Mahwah was one of the defendants in that case. The decision and its aftermath caused Mahwah to grow from a suburban community to the “Edge City” it is today. Dunn, of the Mahwah Museum, is the chronicler of Cragmere and a long-time resident of Mahwah. This program is free. Seats will be available “first come” basis. The library is located at 100 Ridge Road. Sunday Concert Series continues The Mahwah Public Library provides free concerts on Sundays at 2 p.m. during the month of October. Tickets are not necessary, and seating is provided on a “first come” basis. On Oct. 23, the Sandy Jacobs Quartet will perform “Jazz, Blues, Bossa & More.” The quartet will offer great American music from the 1920s to the 1990s by Cole Porter, Peggy Lee, and Nora Jones. The quartet is comprised of Sandy Jacobs, vocals and saxophone; Bob Rodriguez, piano; Stever Varner, bass; and Ronnie Glick, drums. “Globe Hopping with Flute and Guitar!” will be performed by flutist Patricia Lazzara and guitarist Darren O’Neill on Oct. 30. The classical musicians will perform works by Couperin, Molino, Marchelie, Kleynjans, Yoshimatsu, Camisassa, Piazzolla, and Merlin. The library is located at 100 Ridge Road. Church offers ‘Dinosaurs and the Bible’ The Grace and Truth Chapel will host a free program, “Dinosaurs and the Bible,” on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. The DVD presentation will examine scientific knowledge about dinosaurs from a viewpoint that includes the Bible. The program is presented by Dr. Jason Lisle, an astrophysicist who completed his master’s and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Colorado. Light refreshments will be provided. The volunteer group is collecting new or gently-used clothing, furniture, household items, and appliances. These items may be left at the Ramapo Reformed Church, 100 Island Road in Mahwah, on Oct. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m., Oct. 21 from 4 to 7 p.m., and Oct. 22 from 9 to 11 a.m. The group also welcomes donations of department store gift cards, which may be dropped off at Mahwah Bar and Grill at 2 Island Road. Fire department seeks residents’ assistance The Mahwah Fire Department is competing for the opportunity to win funding for fire equipment and training. Grants are being offered by Liberty Mutual, which is teaming up with fire departments around the country, offering an opportunity to win $10,000. In order to win this contest, residents and friends of the fire department are asked to take an online 10 question Be Fire Smart Quiz. This safety survey takes no more than five minutes to complete. The successful completion of participant’s quiz will be credited to the Mahwah Fire Department. The 10 communities with the most completed quizzes will earn grants for their fire departments.
