Mayor DaPuzzo urges citizens: ‘Go the extra mile’
by Frank J. McMahon Mahwah Mayor John DaPuzzo is urging all citizens to make a special effort on Nov. 1, 2011 to “go the extra mile” in personal effort, volunteerism, and service and to recognize those who do so for the good of their community. DaPuzzo has proclaimed that day to be “Extra Mile Day” in the township and he has acknowledged the mission of the Extra Mile America Foundation to create 100 Extra Mile cities and states in America. At a public meeting of the township council, DaPuzzo said he is proud to support “Extra Mile Day” this year. He explained that Mahwah is a community that acknowledges that a special vibrancy exists within the entire community when its individual citizens volunteer collectively. He also emphasized that Mahwah is a community that encourages its citizens to maximize their personal contributions to the community by giving of themselves wholeheartedly and with total effort, commitment, and conviction to their individual ambitions, family, friends, and community. “Mahwah is a community which chooses to shine a light on and celebrate individuals and organizations within its community who ‘go the extra mile’ in order to make a difference and lift up fellow members of their community,” DaPuzzo said. “I urge each individual in the community to take time on this day to not only ‘go the extra mile’ in his or her own life, but to also acknowledge all those around who are inspirational in their efforts and commitment to make their organizations, families, community, country, or world a better place. Isn’t that what Mahwah is all about?” The Extra Mile America Foundation is a non-profit organization that encourages positive attitude and action by reaching out to individuals, organizations, businesses, and schools through speaking engagements, teleconferences, and social networks. The foundation seeks to empower individuals, organizations, and cities to “go the extra mile” with the belief that additional effort opens doors to new possibilities and improves the results in life, both professionally and personally. “Going the extra mile allows us to make a difference in our community and in our world,” said Shawn Anderson, executive director of the Extra Mile America Foundation in his organization’s mission statement. “It empowers people to apply the extra-mile principle, reach their goals, and live a more self-directed life.” He added, “I passionately believe that now is the perfect time to do more, to push harder, and to be more creative. Challenging times are often what we need to rekindle that passion to create our own existence and not let circumstances dictate what happens to us. There is no better time than now to commit to adding more value to our jobs and our communities.”
