Van Kampen is the daughter of Ruth O’Hara and Daniel Van Kampen of Ramsey and the granddaughter of Ruth O’Hara of Midland Park. Van Kampen will represent her home state at the National Pageant to be held in Anaheim California at Disneyland® during Thanksgiving week. At that time, she will have the opportunity to win a share of over $500,000 in cash and prizes. Van Kampen is a student at Ramapo College, where she is on the Dean’s List. Chris Maurer, chief judo instructor of the YWCA of Bergen County in Ridgewood, has been promoted by the United States Judo Association to Fifth Degree Black Belt. The Mahwah resident is one of only a small number of female judoka in the country to earn such a high ranking. Maurer began studying judo 38 years ago. During her nearly four decades in the sport, she has won more than 150 local, state, national, and international titles. She has trained at the National Judo Institute in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and coached at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, New York. “When I was competing, I ate, drank, and slept judo,” she said. “I even missed my senior prom to compete in the National Junior Olympics.” After many years of competition, Maurer turned her attention to teaching judo. She started the YWCA program 25 years ago. During that time, she has expanded the judo program to include a “Lil’ Dragons” class which introduces children ages four through seven to the martial arts. “Teaching judo is so rewarding,” Maurer said. “I’ve seen judo make life changing differences in both children and adults. Judo gives kids the confidence to stand up to bullies and to say “no” to peer pressure. It also teaches leadership skills which can translate into any career.” Maurer also heads the CNBC Radio Network as managing producer and anchor. “I doubt I would be where I am in my broadcasting career today had I not been involved in judo,” she said. “Judo teaches you some really useful life lessons.
