special honor. We congratulate them for their accomplishments and their pride in their Italian heritage,” said John Nunziata, UNICO’s chairperson for the Piccolo Award & Scholarships, as he presented the awards. The two recipients accepted their awards in honor of Lou Molino, long time Ramsey Athletic Director who died unexpectedly this year. In their acceptance speeches, both Padovano and Schifano expressed their admiration and appreciation of all Molino had done for them and several generations of Ramsey students. They acknowledged pride in their rich Italian ancestry and culture. “Jill and Anthony are exemplary representatives of their senior class,” said Ramsey UNICO President Louis LaVigna. “They have demonstrated commitment to their studies, athletics and families. We are proud to honor them.” Donna and Chris Schifano and Dori and Joe Padovano, parents of the award winners, attended the ceremony as did Ramsey High School Principal Richard Lio, Assistant Principal Matthew Certo, Interim Athletic Director Tom Zaccone, and UNICO Treasurer Steve Wekar and his wife Laurie. Coaches Becky Fantry, Kevin McGuire, and Steve Trocolar also attended.

Jill Padovano and Anthony Schifano, members of the Ramsey High School Class of 2011, have received the prestigious Brian Piccolo Memorial Award presented each year to a female and male Ramsey High School scholar-athlete of Italian ancestry who models the ideals of Brian Piccolo. Padovano and Schifano were honored along with other select Bergen County scholarathletes at the Brian Piccolo Award dinner on May 4 at Florentine Gardens. The award, which is sponsored by the Greater Ramsey Chapter of UNICO International, is named in memory of a courageous young man who was an inspiration
for many, though he died at 26 in 1970. Piccolo was a promising NFL player with the Chicago Bears who was a star at Wake Forest University. His battle with disease never dampened the spirit of this young man, who was an inspiration to his family, teammates, and friends. UNICO is a nationwide service organization which promotes Italian-American heritage and supports cultural, educational and community causes. “Jill and Anthony have earned this award both in the classroom and on the basketball court.
