Board reorganizes; Shada to continue as president
by Frank J. McMahon The Mahwah Board of Education has reorganized following the voters’ approval of the 2011-12 budget and the election of three incumbent trustees. School Board Secretary and Business Administrator Edward Deptula gave the board the results of the election that did not include a count of provisional ballots. He advised that the budget was approved 1,329 to 858, while Patricia Shada was reelected with 1,408 votes, Kenneth Angelo was reelected with 1,406 votes, and Peter Wendrychowicz was reelected with 1,347 votes. Each of the newly reelected trustees was then sworn in to office by Deptula, and the board proceeded to elect its officers for the new school year. Shada was nominated to continue as the board’s president by trustee Christine Davis, Charles Saldarini was nominated by trustee John Dolan to be the board’s first vice president, and Davis was nominated by trustee Candace Larson to be the board’s second vice president. All three nominees were appointed unanimously. The board then proceeded to readopt its existing bylaws, policies, and regulations and set the schedule of board meetings for the next school year starting with a public work session/action meeting on May 25. All meetings were scheduled for Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. in the administration building on Ridge Road. There will generally be two meetings a month except in July, August, December, and next March. Suzanne Curry was appointed the school board’s representative to the Bergen County School Boards Association, with Wendrychowicz as her alternate. Wendrychowicz was named representative to the New Jersey School Boards Association -Legislative Committee, with Curry as his alternate. Curry was also appointed liaison to the Mahwah Schools Foundation. Deptula was reappointed business administrator/board secretary for the period of July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2012. He
was also appointed as the board’s qualified purchasing agent. The law firms of Schwartz, Simon, Edelson & Celso, LLC of Morristown and Schenck, Price, Smith & King, LLP of Florham Park were appointed to serve as the board’s legal firms through June 30, 2012. Kenneth Sesholtz was appointed treasurer of school monies, TM Vrabel and Associates, LLC of Denville was appointed as the board’s auditors, and Tokarski Millerman Architects, LLC of Brick was named the district’s architectural firm. Dr. Everett Schlam was appointed as the school physician and Assistant Superintendent Janet Riley Donohue was appointed as the district’s affirmative action officer, Title IX Coordinator, and Section 504 Compliance Officer while Scot Van Demark, the district’s supervisor of buildings and grounds, was appointed as the board’s Americans with Disabilities Act Coordinator. The board also appointed Nancy Repetti, currently the district’s business office secretary, to the position of secretary to the superintendent. In addition, the board approved the curricula and organizational chart for 2011-12.

The Mahwah eighth grade girls Thunderbird basketball team completed a successful season winning the Northwest Bergen/Passaic Girls Basketball league championship. This is the fifth consecutive championship season for the Lady T-Birds. They have won the NWBP league championship each year starting with their fourth grade season. This year, the Mahwah team faced a very good Wanaque team and won 48 – 40 in the championship game. The Mahwah Thunderbirds have an overall five year record of 120 wins and 13 losses. The team players in alphabetical order are: Alyssa Baldi, Jenna Braun, Deanna Burbridge, Julia DeCandia, Else DiGiacopo, Cassandra Heafy, Alexandra Kornberger, Alexandria Mesropyan, Stephanie Olear, Kaylie Shaffer, and Taylor Ziman. The head coach is Allan Baldi and assistant coaches are Tom Durso and Jon Ziman.
