Ramsey Police report that Mahwah resident Paul Sowell, 66, fatally shot himself on April 21. On that date, the Ramsey Police Department received information from the Ramapo (New York) Police Department that there was a possible bank robber in the area. Police said the Mahwah man and a 2009 Honda SUV bearing New Jersey registration SEZ15U may have been involved in recent bank robberies in the area. At approximately 6 p.m., Detective Brad Smith and Patrolman Vasili Pieratos overheard a radio transmission from the Mahwah Police Department that an armed robbery had just occurred in Ramapo, New York. The description of the suspect vehicle was same as the intelligence the Ramsey Police Department received earlier in the day. Shortly after the Mahwah Police Department’s initial

broadcast, it was reported that a Mahwah police officer observed the vehicle traveling south on North Franklin Turnpike. Lt. Blank of the Mahwah Police Department followed this vehicle into Ramsey. Members of the Ramsey Police Department assisted in an endeavor to stop the suspect vehicle as it continued south on North Franklin Turnpike at speeds of 40 miles per hour. At the intersection of North Franklin Turnpike and Spring Street in Ramsey, the suspect vehicle turned into the right lane and stopped. Detective Smith, Patrolman Pieratos, and Lieutenant Blank exited their vehicles and ordered the suspect out of the car. During the exchange, the officers observed the suspect raise a silver colored revolver that was aimed towards the roof of the vehicle. The officers ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, later described as a Taurus Hy Lite .38 caliber
two-inch barrel, five-shot gun. “I can’t drop the gun,” the suspect told the officer. The suspect then lowered the weapon, aimed it at his chest, and fired one round into his chest. (The suspect was inside the car in the driver’s seat when the weapon was discharged.) Det. Smith immediately advised Ramsey Police Headquarters requesting an ambulance and paramedics for a gunshot wound. After the suspect discharged his weapon, the Ramsey and Mahwah officers tactically approached the vehicle. They were able to remove the suspect and immediately began to administer first aid and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The suspect was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, New York via Ramsey (continued on page 23)
