Teens available for employment YES (Youth Employment Services) has a roster of available Ramsey High School teens who babysit; pet sit; do yard work, computer, or office work; and a host of other jobs. Senior events include talk by Dressler Bergen County Surrogate Michael Dressler will address the Ramsey Seniors at the group’s May 10 luncheon, which will be held at noon at the Finch Park Center. Dressler will discuss the importance of knowing your legal rights. Sign up at borough hall. Seating is limited. A light lunch will be provided by ShopRite. Signup for the May 25 trip to the Thimble Islands will begin Tuesday, May 3 at 10 a.m. at borough hall. Located in and around the harbor of Stony Creek in the southeast corner of Branford, Connecticut, the islands are pink granite bedrock, and were the tops of hills prior to the last Ice Age. Accessible only by boat, many have homes built on them. After a boat ride through Long Island Sound, there will be a lunch at the USS Chowder Pot II and a visit to the Trolley Museum for a trolley ride. The cost for this day trip is $50 per person. Checks may be made payable to the Borough of Ramsey. The bus will depart Finch Park at 7:45 a.m. and will return at approximately 7 p.m. Space is limited to 49 persons. The seniors will hold an Open House on Thursday, May 12 at 1 p.m. at the center in Finch Park. Attendees will meet Master Peng who will present new “seniorized” tai chi information. Green tea and refreshments will be served. AARP will host a driving course on May 20 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the center in Finch Park. New Jersey law limits class size to 25 participants, who will be chosen by lottery. Registration has begun at borough hall. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members. Attendees should bring a valid New Jersey license, lunch, and a beverage. New Jersey drivers who take the course qualify for an automobile insurance premium discount. Spring bocce for women will begin May 5 at 1 p.m. The Bocce Boys are also planning an early May start for their
season. Stop by the senior center for more information. Reorganization session set The Friends of Ramsey Library will hold its annual reorganization meeting on Monday, May 9 at 10 a.m. in the program room at the Ramsey Free Public Library, 30 Wyckoff Avenue. Continuing as officers for 2011-12 will be Doris Latham, president; Carol Tonnon, vice president; Marilyn Taylor, secretary; and Pat Confrancisco, treasurer. The Friends donated the sculpture “Humansphere” by artist Steve Zaluski, which welcomes visitors at the library’s main entrance. FORL meets at 10 a.m. on the second Monday of the month, except for July and August. New members are welcome to join the organization and help plan library events, including the Fall Book Sale and cultural arts programs. For details, call (201) 327-1445. Car Show participants sought Ramsey High School’s auto shop will host its first Car Show on Saturday, May 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Rain date: May 22.) Owners of antique cars and trucks are invited to participate in the event, which will be held on the front lawn of the high school. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. The $5 entrance fee will include a goodie bag. Judging will begin at 1 p.m. Trophies in various categories will be presented at 3 p.m. A designated area to park trailers will be available. The event will include food, music, and free admission for spectators. Proceeds from the event will benefit the auto shop program at Ramsey High School, one of the last high schools in the area to offer auto shop as part of the curriculum. Club sets Heirloom Tomato Sale The Woman’s Club of Ramsey will sponsor its Eighth Annual Heirloom Tomato Transplant Sale on May 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Masonic Lodge at the corner of Lake Street and Franklin Turnpike in Ramsey. A large variety of heirloom tomato plants will be offered along with a selection of pepper, eggplant, squash, cucumber, and herb plants. Over 90 types of heirloom tomatoes
and many new tomatoes will be offered, including the Ramapo and Moreton varieties. Visit jerseygrown.com to view the available varieties and pre-order plants. Children’s summer programs available This summer, the Ramsey Adult School will offer three camp experiences for children through the Youth and Children’s Programs office. Registration is under way. Programs are available for Ramsey students and for out-of-district students. Summer Sensations is a morning enrichment program for children entering kindergarten through fifth grade. Workshops stimulate creative thinking while integrating reading, math, science, computer, music, art, and other skills. Hours are 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., five days per week. Summer Sensations includes three, one-week sessions from July 11 to 29 at Tisdale School. Summer Vibrations, a multi-faceted, three-week music camp for children entering grades five through nine, enables children to participate in an overall music experience including instrument lessons, vocal lessons, music-based electives, ensembles, and Master Forums. New this year is Rock Band offered by audition for grades six through nine. Hours are 9:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., five days a week at Dater School in Ramsey. Summer Explorations, a two-week camp for children entering grades six through eight, promotes cooperative learning, individual creativity, and critical thinking skills. This year’s “Caught in the Act: Book Him!” program consists of crime scene symposiums, labs, and courtroom breakouts. Students will also visit the Ramsey Police Station to witness the booking process; the Bergen County Bureau of Criminal Investigation, where tours will be provided at a CSI lab; and the Ramsey Courthouse, where a mock trial will take place.
