Ramsey
At press time, Ramsey officials expected that the newly renovated public library at 30 Wyckoff Avenue would have a “soft opening” the weekend of March 26. A “Grand Opening” has been planned for April 16, a borough official reported. The library’s temporary location at 171 Lake Street, which opened in September 2009, closed on Feb. 23. Staff members then began packing up the Lake Street location in anticipation of the move back to Wyckoff Avenue. Other BCCLS libraries in the area assisted Ramsey residents while the borough’s facilities were closed. The Ramsey Library, which is approximately four decades old, remains a 14,000 square foot structure, but the interior space has been reconfigured to enhance efficiency. The renovation included the replacement of all the windows and doors, the replacement of the heating and air conditioning system with equipment that saves energy and space, ADA-compliant restrooms, redesigned areas

for patrons of all ages, space for wireless computing, and the reconfiguration of the library entrances. New popular books and media fill the open atrium of the library, and book stacks are located along the sides of the building. A glass enclosed reading room highlights the Wyckoff Avenue view. The updated program room opens directly
into the children’s area for easy access to story times and crafts. The Ramsey Council awarded the library renovation contract to Aark Contractors, Inc. of Spring Valley, New York in 2009. The project is being funded by a $4,250,000 bond ordinance.
Elaine Dunn, a member of the Bear Education and Resource Group of Hewitt, will present a Power Point program on bears at the Ramsey Rescue Squad Building, 41 South Island Avenue, on Tuesday, March 29 at 7 p.m. The B.E.A.R. Group’s mission is to educate residents about black bears, reduce unwarranted fears, and foster peaceful coexistence between people and bears. The event is sponsored by the Ramsey Environmental Commission.
Learn about black bears
In 1911, our spirits soared, too.
One hundred years ago, as the Wright Brothers’ dreams of soaring in a glider finally were achieved, 14 deacons from the Reformed tradition in Bergen and Passaic counties envisioned a way to lift the human spirit. They made a commitment to build a hospital for the mentally ill which would provide physical, mental, and spiritual care based on Christian principles. From a small 17-bed psychiatric hospital in a farmhouse, Christian Health Care Center (CHCC) has grown today to include a broad spectrum of mental-health and elder-care services with 12 expansive buildings on 78 acres in Wyckoff and Hawthorne, with a satellite location in Wayne. To learn all of the ways CHCC is continuing to lift the spirits of thousands of community residents, visit us at chccnj.org.
