Council approves resolution to update 2011 pool fees
by Frank J. McMahon The Mahwah Township Council has passed a resolution to increase the 2011 season fees for residents who use the Mahwah Pool, while reducing fees for nonresidents. The council decided to change the rates, and the flexibility of the pool director to adjust some rates based on attendance, in an attempt to improve attendance at the pool. The facility is not operating at a selfsustaining level. During the discussion about how to increase revenue, it was suggested that all the pool fees should be increased, or that the rate for residents be decreased in order to increase membership. Marion Crescitelli, the director of the municipal pool, opposed lowering residents’ fees. She claimed that the majority of pool members are Mahwah residents and the decrease would lead to less revenue. However, she did favor lowering the fees for non-residents in order to increase membership. Councilman Harry Williams, a former owner of a membership type pool, acknowledged the difficulty of operating a pool profitably. He attributed the decline in memberships at the municipal pool to the impact of the ongoing recession, the township’s aging population and decline in lower grade school-aged children, and the number of homes that now have pools. After taking a straw poll of the council, the governing body agreed that the membership rate for a Mahwah large family (those who are related and living in one household) would be increased by $10 to $285, while the membership rate for a small family (those who are related and living at the same residence), would be raised by $5 to $115 per person, if those memberships are purchased before April 30. After that date, the rates will remain at $360 for the family of four and $150 per person for a small family. The membership rate for Mahwah senior citizens or disabled residents will remain at $40. The fees for Mahwah individuals will be $115 for early registration and $150 after April 30. The fee for non-resident individual memberships has been reduced from $275 to $200 this year, and the membership fee for large families has been reduced from $735 to $400, while the rate for non-resident small families was reduced from $275 to $200. The daily rate for residents and guests of members will remain at $9 per person per

day on weekdays and $10 per child (three years old to 11 years old) per day, and $12 per adult (12 years old and older) per day, on weekends. Children under two years old will still be admitted free of charge, and Mahwah senior citizens may use the pool at the daily rate of $5 per person. The group party rate this year will remain at $7 per person with reservations only. The after school swimming, when available, will remain at $4 per person. From Aug. 15 through the end of the season, the pool director may lower the daily fees charged, and, if the pool is not full, as determined by the director, nonresidents who are not guests of members will be permitted to use the pool at the daily weekday or weekend rate. If the pool is not busy on weekends, the director may lower the resident weekend rate to the resident daily rate for weekdays. The municipal pool is located at 700 Darlington Avenue within the Mahwah swim and street hockey complex. The facility offers a 25-meter pool with diving well, a wading pool for babies, a 40-foot intermediate pool for children, volleyball and playground areas, picnic tables and grills, extensive lawns, a clubhouse with lockers and showers, and a patio with food service. There are also swings and a slide play area for children, shade structures, and a lightning detection system with warning sirens. All levels of swimming and diving are taught at the pool, along with instructional lifeguard, CPR, and first aid programs. Membership application forms are mailed to all residents early in the spring. The pool opens the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. or dusk, and full weekday operations start when the Mahwah schools close for the summer. Labor Day is the last day of the swim season.
